In lieu of a normal Quick Takes, I\u2019m going to glom onto the\u00a0Immediate Book Meme<\/strong>. \u00a0It was started by DarwinCatholic<\/a>, and then Betty Duffy<\/a>, Simcha Fisher<\/a>, Happy Catholic Bookshelf<\/a>, Tom McDonald<\/a>, and The Wine Dark Sea<\/a> joined in. \u00a0So, here\u2019s my lineup:<\/p>\n

What book are you reading now?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Martian<\/a><\/em> by Andy Weir<\/p>\n

This book was originally published as a serial about the attempts by one Mars astronaut to stay alive when his fleeing crewmates mistakenly leaves him for dead. \u00a0I think it roughly resembles\u00a0Gravity<\/em> if\u00a0Gravity\u00a0<\/em>were less about a woman slowly regaining the will to live and more about a series of fascinating engineering problems. \u00a0I\u2019m enjoying it a good deal.<\/p>\n

<\/a>\u2014 3 \u2014<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

What book did you just finish?<\/strong><\/p>\n

American Hippopotamus<\/em><\/a> by Jon Mooallem<\/p>\n

This was a kindle single, released by the Atavist<\/em> (which has a whole library of titles<\/a> I\u2019m planning to browse through) about the attempt to launch hippo ranching in the swamps of America. \u00a0The two main dynamos in this effort, prior to collaboration on this issue, had both been attempting to assassinate each other during the Boer war.<\/p>\n

Also, someone in this book goes scouting and, in an attempt to remain inconspicuous, does so ensconced in a cow corpse, with eyeholes cut out of the hide.<\/p>\n

I really enjoyed reading\u00a0American Hippopotamus<\/em>, but I recommend reading it in the same room as a friend. \u00a0I mostly read it while walking, and kept wanting to grab another pedestrian to read something aloud and say, \u201cI can\u2019t believe this is\u00a0non-fiction<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n
