{"id":8993,"date":"2014-03-02T11:02:57","date_gmt":"2014-03-02T16:02:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/unequallyyoked\/?p=8993"},"modified":"2014-03-02T14:47:24","modified_gmt":"2014-03-02T19:47:24","slug":"looking-toward-lent-with-st-ulrich","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/unequallyyoked\/2014\/03\/looking-toward-lent-with-st-ulrich.html","title":{"rendered":"Looking toward Lent with St. Ulrich"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/84\/2014\/03\/W-stulri.png\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8994\" title=\"W-stulri\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/84\/2014\/03\/W-stulri.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"273\" height=\"311\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This month, <a href=\"http:\/\/jenniferfulwiler.com\/saints\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Jen Fulwiler\u2019s randomized saint assigner<\/a> spun up <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ulrich_of_Augsburg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">St. Ulrich of Augsburg<\/a>\u00a0for me, who was apparently the first saint to be canonized. \u00a0That\u2019s not the first saint to be\u00a0<em>recognized<\/em>, but in 933, he was the first to be officially canonized by the pope, instead of having veneration root itself solely through the consensus of the laity.<\/p>\n<p>St. Ulrich is the saint who will be ushering me into Lent, but I\u2019ll confess I\u2019m a little unsure what to do with him. \u00a0He served as a court retainer, a bishop, and a general, so he doesn\u2019t have just one special kind of circumstance that I should keep in mind to call on him. \u00a0His special cares include certain parts of Germany, warding off birth complications, opposing fever and faintness, and happy death. \u00a0I can\u2019t say there\u2019s\u00a0<em>nothing<\/em> that speaks to me, since he also apparently has a special love for weavers, and I\u2019ve dabbled.<\/p>\n<p>But there\u2019s no obvious connection <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/unequallyyoked\/2014\/02\/working-alongside-saint-zita.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">as there was for St. Zita<\/a>, who I asked to specially watch over me at work, and to keep me from treating it as a time when I\u2019m spiritually \u201coff.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m a little less sure what to do with St. Ulrich, and I\u2019d appreciate your suggestions. \u00a0Since Lent is fast approaching, and I\u2019m<a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/unequallyyoked\/2014\/02\/mercy-is-not-intransitive.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"> not so great at doing works of mercy<\/a>, my best idea for the month is to ask St. Ulrich to open my eyes to people who need his intercession and ask for help joining my prayers and labors to his on their behalf.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And, at any rate, come April, I\u2019ll be able to finish this aphorism, \u201cLent came in like St. Ulrich, but it went out like\u2026.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em>DarwinCatholic is praying a novena for Ordering Lives Wisely by St. Thomas Aquinas, that will end on Ash Wednesday. \u00a0If you\u2019d like to join her and me, you can\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/darwincatholic.blogspot.com\/2014\/03\/novena-for-order-day-6.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">find the prayers here<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This month, Jen Fulwiler\u2019s randomized saint assigner spun up St. Ulrich of Augsburg\u00a0for me, who was apparently the first saint to be canonized. \u00a0That\u2019s not the first saint to be\u00a0recognized, but in 933, he was the first to be officially canonized by the pope, instead of having veneration root itself solely through the consensus of [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":127,"featured_media":8994,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[177],"tags":[226],"class_list":["post-8993","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-spiritual-practice","tag-saint-of-the-month"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v21.1 -
