In 2014, I\u2019m reading and blogging through Pope Francis\/Cardinal Bergoglio\u2019s\u00a0<\/em>Open Mind, Faithful Heart: Reflections on Following Jesus<\/a>. \u00a0Every Monday, I\u2019ll be writing about the next meditation in the book, so you\u2019re welcome to\u00a0peruse them all<\/a>\u00a0and\/or read along.<\/em>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

I\u2019m non-metaphorically feverish, so my thoughts on this week\u2019s chapter from Pope Francis\u2019s book will be brief. \u00a0Here\u2019s the quote I was most struck by in this week\u2019s reading:<\/p>\n

When Jesus Christ is present, the true light shines and all shadows disappear (1 John 2:8). \u00a0But then begins the drama of the rejection of the light. \u00a0This light, which brings the law and the prophets to fulfillment, is spurned, because its luminosity is different from what was expected; its brilliance illumines places other than those imagined; it provokes opposition as challenging as it is perplexing.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In many of the stories and parables of the Bible, there\u2019s a danger in looking too far beyond our daily needs and tasks. \u00a0There\u2019s nothing wrong with curiosity and theorizing, but, if we push too far past what we know, we have to hold on lightly to the ideas we build, so that we don\u2019t become Fred Hoyles\u2013clinging to his theory of the Steady State universe<\/a> long after it had been disproven.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019ve ever done an experiment and been\u00a0angry<\/em> at your data as it came in and started looking noisier, then you\u2019ve experienced the kind of perplexing challenge that Pope Francis is describing. \u00a0Although you started by trying to discover something true<\/em>, the truth isn;t welcome by the time it shows up.<\/p>\n

This kind of reaction can be triggered even by truths that are\u00a0obviously<\/em> welcome news, from an outside perspective. \u00a0If you lose your wallet, panic or yell at someone, and then the wallet is found, your previous distress no longer feels\u00a0justified<\/em>, so it almost feels more desirable to be seriously inconvenienced in order to have a consistent narrative of the experience. \u00a0(Same goes for not\u00a0wanting<\/em> to resolve a fight and re-recognize your opponent as a person again).<\/p>\n

Christ comes and upends the old order and the old expectations. \u00a0He doesn\u2019t contradict the world we\u2019ve known so far, but, as a friend of mine recently said about mathematics, \u201c[He makes]\u00a0simple things complex so that complex things become simple.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
