{"id":9570,"date":"2014-05-27T13:31:23","date_gmt":"2014-05-27T17:31:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/unequallyyoked\/?p=9570"},"modified":"2014-05-27T13:31:23","modified_gmt":"2014-05-27T17:31:23","slug":"amazon-foreshadows-internet-fights-to-come","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/unequallyyoked\/2014\/05\/amazon-foreshadows-internet-fights-to-come.html","title":{"rendered":"Amazon Foreshadows Internet Fights to Come"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/84\/2014\/05\/amazon-delay.png\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-9571\" title=\"amazon-delay\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/84\/2014\/05\/amazon-delay.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"332\" height=\"228\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Debates over net neutrality tend to be a bit abstract and hypothetical for consumers. \u00a0Net neutrality had been the status quo for the internet since we all started using it, so, thinking of the consequences of changing this standard requires making an imaginative leap. \u00a0That\u2019s why I did a walk through of the Amazon\/Hachette fight for\u00a0<em>The American Conservative<\/em> this week and traced out the way it foreshadows fights between ISPs and websites:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3><a href=\"http:\/\/theam.cn\/1jn6lvN\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Amazon\u2019s War Is First in a Series<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>The FCC is\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.wsj.com\/washwire\/2014\/05\/22\/the-fccs-net-neutrality-options\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">considering new rules for net neutrality<\/a>, including the possibility of scrapping it all together. If the old rules are thrown out, customers will have to rely on market forces, not regulation, to limit corporate chicanery. But, as Amazon\u2019s war of attrition with Hachette suggests, ordinary consumers have a limited ability to force a marketplace to stay open to all.<\/p>\n<p>Consumers have more power to punish Amazon than an internet service provider. Striking back against the retailer means placing your order somewhere else or cancelling your Prime membership. Punishing your ISP is an all or nothing affair, and switching providers means spending the day at home waiting for the cable guy.\u00a0That\u2019s\u00a0<em>if<\/em>\u00a0you have the power to change at all, since many apartment dwellers are stuck with whichever company the landlord lets into the building, and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/2013\/07\/we-need-to-stop-focusing-on-just-cable-companies-and-blame-local-government-for-dismal-broadband-competition\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">years of crony capitalism have established regional monopolies at larger scales<\/a>. An ISP would need to behave truly egregiously to lose customers.<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/theam.cn\/1jn6lvN\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Read more at\u00a0<\/a><\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/theam.cn\/1jn6lvN\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The American Conservative\u2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I don\u2019t think that the <em>substance<\/em> of the fight between Hachette and Amazon is completely one-sided, but the\u00a0<em>tactics<\/em> being brought to bear give me the heebie-jeebies.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>P.S.
