{"id":9837,"date":"2014-07-05T17:02:45","date_gmt":"2014-07-05T21:02:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/unequallyyoked\/?p=9837"},"modified":"2014-07-05T17:02:45","modified_gmt":"2014-07-05T21:02:45","slug":"reworking-my-relationship-with-john-the-baptist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/unequallyyoked\/2014\/07\/reworking-my-relationship-with-john-the-baptist.html","title":{"rendered":"Reworking my relationship with John the Baptist"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/84\/2014\/07\/john-the-baptist.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-9840\" title=\"john-the-baptist\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/84\/2014\/07\/john-the-baptist.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"315\" height=\"412\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Since I was on holiday in Ireland, I prorogued picking my next Saint for the month until now, and, this time, I drew a familiar face: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.catholic.org\/saints\/saint.php?saint_id=152\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">John the Baptist<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I knew <em>this<\/em> saint from before my conversion (unlike poor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/unequallyyoked\/2014\/05\/hold-on-loosely-with-blessed-scammacca.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Blessed Scammacca<\/a> who I\u2019d never heard of before drawing him from <a href=\"http:\/\/jenniferfulwiler.com\/saints\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Jen\u2019s generator<\/a>), and he\u2019s already helped me out once. \u00a0When I was on College Jeopardy, one of the categories in the first round was \u201cNew Testament Places\u201d and I deliberately avoided the column, figuring I knew nothing about the topic.<\/p>\n<p>When we finally started drawing those clues, though, I did manage to be first to the buzzer on \u201cThe book of Mark recounts how believers, including Jesus, were baptized in the Jordan River by this man.\u201d \u00a0(Ok, maybe not the most challenging question).<\/p>\n<p>My family had come to watch the taping, and were probably giggling a little in the audience since, somehow, John the Baptist had entered my household vernacular. I don\u2019t remember whether my brother or I was the one to start it, but, somehow, when my mom would ask us what we wanted for dinner, we would wind up stalling for time by saying \u201cBring me\u2026 bring me the head of\u00a0<em>John the Baptist!<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s probably time to have a slightly less ridiculous set of connections to this prophet. \u00a0I think drawing him will somehow result in me reading <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0486421279\/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0486421279&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=unequyoked-20&amp;linkId=LPRIDXILMIHOGULD\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Oscar Wilde\u2019s\u00a0<em>Salome<\/em><\/a> this month, but any other advice for how to learn from this month\u2019s saint?<\/p>\n<p>One question that seems interesting to me is inspired by this passage from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Matthew+16:13-17\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Matthew 16:13-17<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, \u201cWho do people say that the Son of Man is?\u201d And they said, \u201cSome say John the Baptist, but others Elijah, and still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.\u201d He said to them, \u201cBut who do you say that I am?\u201d Simon Peter answered, \u201cYou are the Messiah,\u00a0the Son of the living God.\u201d \u00a0And Jesus answered him, \u201cBlessed are you, Simon son of Jonah!
