Last Friday the Confederate flag came down<\/a>\u00a0in South Carolina, the result of a national debate prompted by photos of Charleston shooter Dylann Roof proudly holding that flag.<\/p>\n

I fully support the exclusion of the Confederate flag from public life. It\u2019s a symbol of hatred, violence, and divisiveness that has no meaningful place in modern American society. When a symbol becomes a constant reminder of the worst of human behavior, when it instils fear and incites violence, when it divides and provokes, then it\u2019s time to relegate it to the dustbin of history.<\/p>\n

But amid all the hullabaloo over the Confederate flag, we\u2019re ignoring a\u00a0far more important issue. How is it that nine innocent people can be brutally gunned down by someone who shouldn\u2019t have had a gun in the first place<\/a>, and we end up talking more about a flag than the murder weapon?<\/p>\n

The decision to ditch the Confederate flag is a small concession that, though symbolically important, overshadows the far more\u00a0significant\u00a0issue of gun violence in America. We\u2019re living through an alarming rise of gun-related violence<\/a>, yet as a society we remain frustratingly\u00a0divided on the issue of guns<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Why haven\u2019t the shootings in Aurora<\/a>, Oak Creek<\/a>, Newtown<\/a>, Charleston<\/a>, and myriad other locales across the United States spurred us to action?<\/p>\n

Why aren\u2019t Americans united in an effort to pass tougher gun laws, to plug legal loopholes, to develop better mental health resources, and to end the epidemic of gun violence?<\/p>\n

And why aren\u2019t Christians leading that charge? Christians claim to follow Jesus, the man who commanded us to\u00a0\u201clove your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,\u201d (Mat. 5:44) and \u201cdo not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also.\u201d (Mat. 5:39)<\/p>\n

Why, in seeming direct opposition to those commands as well as other biblical calls to peace, are so many Christians so willing to lend their voices and their money to the pro-gun movement?<\/p>\n

I realize there are responses to these questions, ranging from the naive and self-serving prooftexting of Luke 22:36<\/a> \u2014 \u201cJesus told us to arm ourselves!\u201d \u2014 to the complex history of religions and politics in America. But I\u2019m not simply looking for explanations, I\u2019m looking for answers<\/em>,\u00a0<\/em>for a way forward out of the mess we\u2019ve gotten ourselves into.<\/p>\n

As horrible as the Confederate flag is, the flag itself hasn\u2019t killed anyone. Dylann Roof used a gun, not a flag, inside Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church. Guns, not flags, were used to shoot over 1,400 people<\/a> in Chicago this year. Guns, not flags, were used in the 180 mass shootings<\/a> that have already occurred in American in 2015.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s been three weeks since Walmart, Amazon, eBay, and Sears all announced<\/a> that they were going to stop selling Confederate flag merchandise. What major businesses are leading the charge for more sane gun laws<\/a>? Where is the public outcry against the arms industry? When will we face this issue head-on?<\/p>\n

I\u2019m happy the Confederate flag is fading into the sunset of American history. I\u2019ll be even happier when guns and gun violence follow it.<\/p>\n
