He said, <\/p>\n<p><em>In those environments, if we think that we\u2019re just gonna send the police to do the dirty work of containing the problems that arise there, without as a nation and as a society saying what can we do to change those communities, to help lift up those communities and give those kids opportunity, then we\u2019re not gonna solve this problem.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Yes, that fairly honest. He also said, <\/p>\n<p><em>If we really want to solve the problem, we could, it\u2019s just it would require everybody saying this is important, this is significant and that we just don\u2019t pay attention to these communities when a CVS burns. And we don\u2019t just pay attention when a man gets shot or has his spine snapped.<\/em> <\/p>\n<p>It is frightening when the power elite can\u2019t state the obvious. Imagine that\u2014actually caring about our fellow US citizens when they aren\u2019t on TV . . . <\/p>\n<p>Nah. That\u2019s clearly a Liberal idea . . . .<\/p>\n<p>After all, in that \u201cWe the People\u201d document, the goals are . . .  \u201cto form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity . . .\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Oh, wait. It appears Justice and domestic Tranquility don\u2019t exist in Baltimore. \u201cGeneral Welfare\u201d certainly doesn\u2019t, with an unemployment rate of 37% among young African American men. Huh. How about that. <\/p>\n<p>Where is the vision? How can it be that stating the obvious is so difficult? <\/p>\n<p><strong>THE END OF POWER<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>W.S. Gilbert, of Gilbert and Sullivan fame, once wrote,<\/p>\n<p><em>I often think it\u2019s comical\u2014Fal, lal, la!\u00a0<br>\nHow Nature always does contrive\u2014Fal, lal, la!<br>\nThat every boy and every gal<br>\nThat\u2019s born into the world alive<br>\nIs either a little Liberal<br>\nOr else a little Conservative.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The recent events in Baltimore underline the inability of the US governing class to achieve much in the way of domestic tranquility, let alone general welfare for the populace. More than one pundit has recently claimed that the US and other nation-states as known in the Twentieth Century have fractured into irreconcilable tribes. The US is a good example, never having coalesced across the  Mason-Dixon divide, and now fractured into Left and Right, white and non-white, rich and poor. Then there are the fractures due to language and religion. Tribes and tribalism.<\/p>\n<p>Columnist Moises Naim calls this The End of Power in a book by the same name. Naim means the end of the sort of power that would allow an American President to speak simple truths, the end of the sort of power the US Constitution sought to establish. <\/p>\n<p>Yet, the Baltimore situation has created some unexpected alliances and generated some interesting questions: who do the police serve? Who do the Crips and Bloods serve? Who is doing the looting? Who are the protesters? What are the protests about?<\/p>\n<p>As that great . . . <a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/147\/2015\/04\/IMG_3565.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/147\/2015\/04\/IMG_3565-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_3565\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"aligncenter size-thumbnail wp-image-3657\"><\/a>prophet . . . Mick Jagger . . . ironically put it, \u201cHe can\u2019t be a man because he doesn\u2019t smoke \/ The same cigarettes as me.\u201d That\u2019s an attitude conducive to mass marketing and endless warfare. It is not an idea conducive to domestic tranquility or the general welfare. <\/p>\n<p>I have no illusions about a Good \u2018Ol Days when \u201cwe the people\u201d embodied our ideals. What is known as the Baltimore Riot was an attack of Confederate sympathizers on a Union musical band in 1861. What is known as the Baltimore Riot of 1968 was quelled with such force that it put the corrupt governor of the state, Spiro T. Agnew, into Federal office. There haven\u2019t been any good \u2018ol days.<\/p>\n<p>If nation-states are to survive in any meaningful way, those of us (left right black white religious secular etc., etc) who believe that human flourishing is the meaning and purpose of communal government must insist upon that fact and act upon it. <\/p>\n<p>I often think it\u2019s comical\u2014Fal, lal, la!\u00a0<br>\nHow Nature always does contrive\u2014Fal, lal, la!<\/p>\n<p>Yes, fal, lal, la!\u00a0Time to join in the song. It\u2019s the human comedy.
