Oshun is the Santeria (Lucumi) religion’s Orisha of love, beauty, fertility, abundance, bounty, money, gold and marriage. Some refer to her as the “mother of the witches,” and her brews are some serious magick. Foremost she is an Orisha or Goddess of Water, the sacred embodiment of the river. Very often she is represented by statues of Caridad del Cobre, Our Lady of Copper, whose feast day is celebrated on September 8th.

Oshun is turned to for help with love spells and magick spells for prosperity. Her ritual colors are yellow and gold and altars are frequently draped in elaborate fabrics for her. The pataki, or legend, that explains this tells of a time when the Orisha was short on money and had to wash her clothes out by hand each day in the river. After repeated washings her white clothes gradually turned yellow. This is why her color is yellow still today. Another legend speaks of her power in the kitchen, the following recipe is in honor of Oshun. Prepare it with love and care, and remember to share.
