As the homeless guy in my laundromat likes to remind everyone “wherever you go, you take yourself with you, Haha” The real problem that I encounter is this, well to put it bluntly, people are lazy. As I mentioned in the last post, people can be flawed. They can be their own worst enemy. They often set their own unnecessary limitations. I did some spellwork for someone once who was trying to get pregnant. One piece of my advice was to go to the cemetery where the ancestors of that child-to-be were buried. She told me it was too much trouble. Now I realize this isn’t easy.

Did someone say this was easy?

Did I miss that page in the big book? Can someone forward it to me, just kidding.

This isn’t easy, sometimes I feel like my Voodoo training is like the “Cruel Tutelage” scene from Kill Bill. My godson makes jokes about having to kneel in stillness on raw rice, as an analogy of what an Afro-Caribbean practitioner has to go through in order to gain some level of success.

Now I place the traditions of Voodoo, Lucumi and Vodou under the umbrella of Pagan religion because they are, at their core, earth-based religions. They are centered around worshiping the Ashe, or spiritual energy, of fire, the clouds, the river, the crossroads, the ancestors in the earth. Very often when I do spellwork for people it involves them travelling to one of these places in nature. If they refuse to go, my hands are already tied. Now can we try and do something with our feet if our hands are tied, yes we can. Will it come out a little weird, yes it will. I mentioned the concept of Ashe, this universal life force that is in all things. Now when I sit down to do a spell for someone the Ashe of that person, and the persons involved is of great importance. For example if you want to get a raise at work whatever spellwork you do will be much more effective if you can leave something magickal at your job, sprinkle something where your boss is going to walk, etc. People give me a lot of complaints when we get to this part of the spellwork. I’m not sure what they are afraid of or embarassed about, and ultimately is that fear more important than the thing they are asking for. Last time I checked, in theory anyway, the United States was a country that

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-3991" src="https://wp-media.patheos.com/blogs/sites/381/2014/09/yemayaofferings-300x200.jpg" alt="Yemaya offerings photo by Lilith Dorsey. I remember once one of my spiritual godmothers had asked that I go to the ocean to leave offerings for Yemaya, the goddess of the sea. Now I live in Brooklyn and the logical place to go was Coney Island. I arrived at the beach dressed in my ritual whites. I had offerings of flowers and food. The flowers were easily placed in the water along with the appropriate blessings and then I looked down at the watermelon I had brought. Then I looked up at the Homeland Security helicopters ( a normal sight in NYC) flying above my head. Logically I thought, they are not going to think I am throwing a watermelon off the pier, and they probably wouldn’t like that anyway. If it was my only option I can honestly say I would have done it, and dealt with the consequences as they came. But I started to think about Yemaya, the gentle mother of us all and the idea came to me. I quickly walked under the pier with the offering, carefully hiding it under my skirts as I waded out into the water. From there I “birthed” it into the ocean, floating it out relatively unnoticed into the waves.

The point is sometimes in magick, spellwork, and life you just have to do what you have to do. Proceed logically and daringly, and almost anything is possible !
