The word “postmodernism” seems to take on a sort of univocal and monolithic reference in our conversations. I recognize that my own contribution often vacillates between attempting to clarify and unintentionally obscuring the topic. What could be beneficial, I think, to a continued study of (study in?) postmodernism is a teasing out of a few distinctions in terms of the continuity and difference between modernity and postmodernism. I’m going to wade into some troubled waters here, and I hope that... Read more

Over the years, there has been considerable debate and confusion about the relationship between Christianity with Islam. Because they are two distinct religions with differing conceptions about God, many are of the opinion that Christians and Muslims do not worship the same God. Despite the fact that Arabic speaking Christians refer to God as Allah, many English speaking Christians even throw a continuous line of insults at Allah, while others create false etymologies for the origin of the name. While... Read more

I know there have been rumors circulating that some of the contributors here at Vox Nova are Marxists. These rumors are true. I am a Marxist. Je suis Marxiste, tendance Groucho. I’m also partial to Harpo. I appreciate the efforts of my fellow Vox Nova contributors to keep my Marxist sympathies under wraps, but it’s no use hiding it anymore. I want to be clear about one thing, though: I am not now, nor have I ever been, a member of... Read more

Do Muslims and Christians worship the same God? The answer to the question is controversial. Most Muslims answer yes, following a passage in the Koran that appears to say that both groups do worship the same God. Many Christians, on the other hand, vigorously dispute this claim. Yet it is not clear what exactly this denial is based on. After all, Christians do not dispute that Muslims worship God, after all, and since there is, in fact, only one God,... Read more

It sure seems many think so. Which makes me wonder: is he perhaps the Antichrist? Then again, it seems Pope John Paul already spotted the rascal. Read more

After his well-known dissent on the death penalty, Justice Scalia now has now become a full-fledged torture supporter. In a recent BBC interview, he argued that interrogators could inflict pain to extract information about an imminent terrorist attack. He says the following: “It seems to me you have to say, as unlikely as that is, it would be absurd to say you couldn’t, I don’t know, stick something under the fingernail, smack him in the face. It would be absurd... Read more

–I notice there is a deep hunger amongst couples for a different way of doing things. Many times both people in the relationship are not sold on the whole NFP, but all it takes is one to get a conversation and questions going. Thus far, the women have been open and not the men. Very interesting. –I HATE looking at a birth control chart and seeing signs of fertility. LADIES, do you know that your Pill does not prevent ovulation?... Read more

Professor Doug Kmiec expands on his recent Slate piece, “Reaganites for Obama?” (in which he wrote, among other things, “Sorry, McCain, Barack Obama is a natural for the Catholic vote,” in this guest commentary, “The Moral Duty to Inquire.”  Although I think the original piece was, in several respects, misguided, I also think that most of what he says in this second piece — e.g., the Faith and Catholic Social Teaching are not the property of one party, Catholic voters have a... Read more

Can someone tell me why it is acceptable to ridicule of Obama by acting as if his supporters view him as the messiah? I really do not get it. I find it appalling. It would be one thing if someone really did use messianic claims for themselves. Then it would be appropriate to point this out and explain why they are wrong. However, Obama is not doing this.  What, exactly, is the point of such dishonest politics? Don’t you think it will... Read more

Obama is projected to win in a blowout.  McCain appears like he will clear the 50% hurdle in the Republican primary.  Overall it appears that the closeness in Wisconsin perceived in early polling under represented Independent voters.  They solidly broke for Obama breaking most of the demographic groups with them.  McCain continues to disappoint with pro-life voters.  In Wisconsin this may have to do with Pro-Life Wisconsin being the party to the lawsuit challenging McCain/Feingold.  While there are legitimate complaints that... Read more
