The other night after my Billings class, the other instructor and I walked out to our cars, actually vans, rather. There they were, side by side. She recently bought a van for her growing family. I bought my van when I was pregnant with my daughter three years ago. Here was my logic: Once she was born, I would stay home with her so I wouldn’t be obtaining a paycheck anymore. We used my last year’s work money to... Read more

People can come up with statistics to prove anything; 14% of people know that. – Homer Simpson. Statistics are a useful, sometimes even necessary, tool for thinking about social policy. They help us to check out own limited experience, intuition, and reasoning against a broader field of evidence. At the same time, statistics are often misleading and can be manipulated to make people draw false inferences from a statistic that aren’t warranted by the evidence. Take, for example, the death... His son, Frank Schaeffer, helped broker an alliance between his father (Francis) and Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, James Dobson... Read more

Tito from Custos Fidei has made it a custom to call this blog and its contributors anywhere from “Marxists” to “heterodox.” This is not new, since these attacks, which became vicious at times, started in our former blog, Evangelical Catholicism, while discussing illegal immigration. I was called many times by Tito a “communist” who was in favor of “social engineering” and so forth. I do not value Tito’s misinterpretation of my views too much, because this comes from the same... I stumbled upon this late, but I thought it might make good reading for those of us who harp on “conservatives” on a regular basis. The Summer 2007 issue of Modern Age is devoted to the theme “Why Am I a Conservative?” I think I’ll give it an honest read. I found out about this issue at James K. A. Smith’s blog, Fors Clavigera (by the way, I think Smith’s work in post-modern theology and hermeneutics is first-rate). Here’s Smith... Read more
Not that I listen to a lot of conservative talk radio, but I’ve noticed that conservative opposition to John McCain seems to be a reaction to his positions on immigration, campaign finance reform, climate change and gay marriage. What has baffled me is the frequent omission of McCain’s strong and consistent support for embryonic stem cell research. I mean, I keep hearing how the Republican Party is the best “vehicle” for advancing pro-life causes, but so little criticism has “stemmed”... Read more
