{"id":14813,"date":"2010-12-06T21:05:07","date_gmt":"2010-12-07T02:05:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/voxnova\/?p=14813"},"modified":"2017-05-03T19:07:58","modified_gmt":"2017-05-04T00:07:58","slug":"on-the-feast-of-st-nicholas-christmas-and-consumerism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/voxnova\/2010\/12\/06\/on-the-feast-of-st-nicholas-christmas-and-consumerism\/","title":{"rendered":"On the Feast of St. Nicholas:  Christmas and Consumerism"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>It is difficult to avoid Santa Claus at this time of year.\u00a0 Our two small boys are regularly asked by perfect strangers whether or not Santa is going to come to their house.\u00a0 But for those of us who insist that Christmas is really about the birth of\u00a0 Jesus Christ, this cultural emphasis on Santa and presents can be tough to navigate.<\/p>\n<p>This year, for the first time, Flannery and I tried something we\u2019ve heard from other Catholic families:\u00a0 we gave the lads some small gifts for the feast of St. Nicholas.\u00a0 Last night we read the story of St. Nicholas, bishop of Myra.\u00a0 We talked about gratitude and generosity and helping those in need.\u00a0 Then we put out our shoes.\u00a0 Lo and behold, in the morning each pair was atop a book and filled with chocolates.\u00a0 We hinted that it wasn\u2019t St. Nick himself who had done the filling, but we didn\u2019t come right out and say that we were responsible.\u00a0 We didn\u2019t have the heart.<\/p>\n<p>Our hope is that, from now until Christmas, when our kids are asked about Santa, they can say that he already came and that they\u2019re waiting for Jesus.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>As you may sense, we don\u2019t feel like we\u2019ve got this aced just yet.\u00a0 So, in our uncertainty, we\u2019re wondering:\u00a0 how do other Christian families out there deal with Santa, St. Nicholas, and Jesus\u2019 birthday?\u00a0 Should Christians encourage belief in a jolly old elf?\u00a0 Should they explicitly reject it?\u00a0 Something in between?\u00a0 How can we give our kids the sense of Christmas\u2019 real meaning without crushing their spirits (or their classmates\u2019)\u00a0 regarding Santa?\u00a0 How do we celebrate our holiday (<em>our holy day<\/em>), when the rest of the world is celebrating the cult of stuff?<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/voxnova\/category\/brett-salkeld\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\">Brett Salkeld<\/a> is a doctoral student in theology at Regis College in Toronto.\u00a0 He is a father of two (so far) and husband of one.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It is difficult to avoid Santa Claus at this time of year.\u00a0 Our two small boys are regularly asked by perfect strangers whether or not Santa is going to come to their house.\u00a0 But for those of us who insist that Christmas is really about the birth of\u00a0 Jesus Christ, this cultural emphasis on Santa [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2991,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[350,123,221,200],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-14813","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-brett-salkeld","category-children","category-christmas","category-consumerism"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v21.1 -
