Italian director, Franco Zeffirelli, whose credits include Romeo and Juliet<\/em><\/a> and the magnificent Jesus of Nazareth<\/em><\/a>, has offered to give Pope Benedict XVI a make-over. Reuters<\/a> has the following comments from the illustrious film-maker:<\/p>\n

\u201cComing after a media-savvy pope like John Paul II is a difficult task \u2026 Benedict XVI still communicates coldly, in a way that is not suited with what is happening around him,\u201d Zeffirelli said.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s an issue I have been discussing with people who have key roles in the Vatican,\u201d said Zeffirelli, who has directed some Vatican television events.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Pope does not smile much, but he is an intellectual. He has a very rigid Bavarian structure,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u2014<\/p>\n

Zeffirelli, 84, added that papal robes were \u201ctoo sumptuous and flashy.\u201d \u201cWhat is needed is the simplicity and sobriety seen in the other echelons of the Church,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Zeffirelli said he was in regular contact with the Pope\u2019s closest aides and had also made proposals to \u201cdefend the image of faith in cinema, the image of the sacred.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Holy See intends to pay a lot more attention to this,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He said today\u2019s religious films were \u201ca horror that the Holy See does not know how to stop.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am a Christian down to the depths of my spirit. I can\u2019t stand by while this disaster unfolds. I am available to put myself at the service of the Church,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIf they officially give me a supervisory role, I will do it full-time.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

After making allegedly agnostic actor Robert Powell<\/a> into a compelling Son of God, I suppose Zefirelli thinks he can do anything with anyone! As to the charge that Pope Benedict XVI \u201cdoes not smile much,\u201d consider the negative evidence:<\/p>\n
