Obama had an impressive run last night.\u00a0 I suspect he\u2019ll be able to capitalize on the momentum factor in the weeks ahead.\u00a0 It\u2019ll be interesting to watch.\u00a0 As he said last night: \u201cWe\u2019re the one\u2019s we\u2019ve been looking for!\u201d \u2014 an old Hopi Indian phrase.\u00a0 People are beginning to believe he just might be right.\u00a0 \u201cYes, we can!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Maryland and Washington, D.C. are up to bat very soon, as is Virginia (Nov. 12). \u00a0The TV spots have been running for days.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Since South Carolina, Hillary appears reluctant to use the traditional Clinton \u201cbreak the kneecap with a ten pound hammer\u201d style politics.\u00a0 Perhaps the Clinton team feels they\u2019ve been outed in that department.\u00a0 Yet that\u2019s her strength \u2014 nasty politics.\u00a0 Hmmmmm!\u00a0\u00a0One wonders. Maybe Obama has already begun to change her?\u00a0 Where\u2019s that fire breathing dragon?\u00a0 Has her brand of politics taken a hit?\u00a0 Is she a victim of her own \u201cpolitics of fear\u201d?<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Pat Buchanan this morning said McCain would make Cheney look like Ghandi!\u00a0 Rather poignant statement.\u00a0 McCain has a big\u00a0ego<\/a>\u00a0and temper.\u00a0 From an advisor\u2019s perspective, I would take that to mean he\u2019d soon become isolated in the White House.\u00a0 Not good for McCain.\u00a0 Not good for America.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Obama seems willing and able to exchange ideas and strategies.\u00a0 To me, that\u2019s everything.\u00a0 The secret of compromise is that it allows dialogue to enrich the final concrete outcome.\u00a0 Inability to compromise indicates a detachment, an abstraction, from reality.\u00a0 Ideological politics reduces everything it touches to ideological engagement.\u00a0 Problems remain unresolved.\u00a0\u00a0Passions dominate.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Ideological politics is what we\u2019ve been living with since McGovern took over the Democratic party and the Fundamentalists took over the Republican Party beginning with the rise of Newt Gingrich.\u00a0 Hopefully, the pragmatic center is seeing its own resurrection.\u00a0 I\u2019d like to see the day when the terms \u201cconservative\u201d and \u201cliberal\u201d have died a peaceful death.\u00a0 For too long they have been mere slogans overburdened with emotive content. Intrinsically, both terms are meaningless.\u00a0 Let\u2019s once again address problems pragmatically and do it against the backdrop of a sound vision for America.<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

I wrote the following a couple years ago:<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201d \u2026 Kennedy\u2019s presidency stands apart from all others since.\u00a0 The core of his leadership was not managerial.\u00a0 Nor was it entombed in the wooden world of policy.\u00a0 Unlike any president since FDR, JFK\u2019s style of governance was profoundly charismatic and inspirational.\u00a0 He used his authority to summon heroic forces from the spiritual depths of ordinary citizens and to unleash therefrom a symphonic chorus of unique creative acts who common purpose was to tame the soul and alleviate the great challenges facing mankind.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

This is what Obama is doing.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

The great problems facing America today cannot be alleviated as mere functions of policy.\u00a0 Policy cannot effectively address the challenges of homelessness, or substance abuse, or violence, or rampant\u00a0 hedonism, or ideological idolatry, or America\u2019s fractured relations with the world.\u00a0 Nor will policy address the twin challenges of poverty and inequity.\u00a0 These challenges can be met effectively only by the energies of individuals reaching out and forging relations with one another in the pursuit of a common purpose.\u00a0 Fifty years of failed policy has made us cynical.\u00a0 But concerted effort in the pursuit of the common good can accomplish many of the dreams we seek to realize.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Policy has been tried for a half century and found wanting.\u00a0 Today there is a great need for inspiration and leadership \u2014 and a grand chorus of national harmony.\u00a0<\/p>\n
