{"id":19028,"date":"2011-09-04T09:02:11","date_gmt":"2011-09-04T14:02:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/voxnova\/?p=19028"},"modified":"2011-09-04T09:02:11","modified_gmt":"2011-09-04T14:02:11","slug":"novas-ordo-23rd-sunday-in-ordinary-time","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/voxnova\/2011\/09\/04\/novas-ordo-23rd-sunday-in-ordinary-time\/","title":{"rendered":"Nova&#8217;s Ordo:  23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>Matthew 18:15-20<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left:60px;\"><em>Jesus said to his disciples:<\/em><br>\n<em> \u201cIf your brother sins against you,<\/em><br>\n<em> go and tell him his fault between you and him alone.<\/em><br>\n<em> If he listens to you, you have won over your brother.<\/em><br>\n<em> If he does not listen,<\/em><br>\n<em> take one or two others along with you,<\/em><br>\n<em> so that \u2018every fact may be established<\/em><br>\n<em> on the testimony of two or three witnesses.\u2019<\/em><br>\n<em> If he refuses to listen to them, tell the church.<\/em><br>\n<em> If he refuses to listen even to the church,<\/em><br>\n<em> then treat him as you would a Gentile or a tax collector.<\/em><br>\n<em> Amen, I say to you,<\/em><br>\n<em> whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven,<\/em><br>\n<em> and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.<\/em><br>\n<em> Again, amen, I say to you,<\/em><br>\n<em> if two of you agree on earth<\/em><br>\n<em> about anything for which they are to pray,<\/em><br>\n<em> it shall be granted to them by my heavenly Father.<\/em><br>\n<em> For where two or three are gathered together in my name,<\/em><br>\n<em> there am I in the midst of them.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>As Christians, are we really ready to take this Gospel passage to heart?\u00a0 Some of us, perhaps many of us (including many who would not or cannot admit it to themselves) think we are.\u00a0 It is far too easy to imagine ourselves as the stern but loving elder of the Church, going to reprove the wayward member of the congregation.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 We can see ourselves, speaking more in love than in anger, gently urging the sinner to be reconciled with us and with the Church.\u00a0<!--more-->\u00a0 We are gracious, even magnanimous in our forgiveness, but we are firm:\u00a0 the sinner must repent.\u00a0 When our loving entreaties fail, we bring along our confreres, equally righteous, but equally sorrowful for the sinner we are confronting.\u00a0 And, should all efforts at reconciliation fail, we can imagine ourselves strong enough to remove the sinner from our midst, treating him \u201cas a Gentile or a tax collector\u201d.\u00a0 We would console ourselves with the belief that it was in the best interest of the Church and the sinner alike:\u00a0 far better to be separated from the Church on earth with the hope of repentance than to be separated from God by the \u201cgreat chasm\u201d that separated Lazarus and the rich man (Luke 16:25).<\/p>\n<p>But are we able to imagine ourselves on the receiving end? \u00a0\u00a0 Can we picture ourselves as the sinner\u2014perhaps angry, perhaps confused, perhaps honestly believing we did nothing wrong\u2014but a sinner nevertheless, guilty of an offense egregious enough that we are being confronted by our brethren, with the threat of expulsion lurking in the background unless we reform our ways. \u00a0 I don\u2019t think we can\u2014or at least, I have a hard time seeing myself from that perspective.\u00a0 Most of us are honest enough to admit that we are sinners, but we tell ourselves that our sins are little things that don\u2019t really rise to this level, or we tell ourselves that our sins are between ourselves and God.\u00a0\u00a0 (Indeed, we think our sins are so minor that we will not even bring them to confession.)\u00a0\u00a0 Each of us, in our own way, has a great deal in common with the Pharisee who went up to the Temple to pray, proudly noting that we are \u201cnot like other people\u2014robbers, evildoers, adulterers\u2014or even like that tax collector\u201d (Luke 18:11).<\/p>\n<p>But in reality the passage from small sins to great ones is easier than we would care to admit.\u00a0\u00a0 We may indeed be in need of fraternal correction. \u00a0\u00a0 So try to imagine yourself in this situation.\u00a0 What would you want:\u00a0 a chance to explain yourself? understanding? forbearance? forgiveness, even seventy times seven fold (Mt 18:22)?\u00a0 Always hold that image, that feeling firmly in mind.\u00a0 See yourself not standing in judgment, but as one judged and found guilty.\u00a0 If we see ourselves in need of mercy, then we will find it easier to be merciful. As Jesus said,<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left:30px;\"><em>Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you (Luke 6:38).<br>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Be ready to admonish the sinner, but be equally ready to accept correction. Admit to yourself that you will need to be forgiven at least as often as you are called upon to forgive.\u00a0\u00a0 And both in giving and receiving, love one another, for \u201clove is the fulfillment of the law.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Matthew 18:15-20 Jesus said to his disciples: \u201cIf your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone.
