For starters, I (of course) meant \u201cMartin\u201d, not \u201cCharlie.\u201d<\/a>\u00a0 (And yes, to all those who pointed out the error, I agree that \u201cApocalypose Now\u201d is infinitely superior to \u201cHot Shots!\u00a0 Part Deux\u201d.)<\/p>\n

Next, I did not intend to (and so, did not) \u2014 as one commenter put it \u2014 \u201cdecry\u201d the recognition of Sheen, whom I admire.\u00a0 What I \u201csigh[ed]\u201d about was the fact \u2014 and it is a fact \u2014 that someone who comes so close <\/em>to being an interestingly consistent and therefore provocative witness to the Gospel of Life dropped the ball, at the end of the day, with the \u201cpersonally opposed but . . . \u201d position.\u00a0 Sheen\u2019s failure here \u2014 to take a position that would actually cost him, <\/em>in the world he inhabits \u2014\u00a0is a missed opportunity.\u00a0 It does not surprise me that Notre Dame\u00a0is going to honor him \u2014 there are many good reasons to\u00a0honor him \u2014 but it does disappoint me that Sheen\u00a0(who is not, after all, running for office or seeking a seat on the Supreme Court) is unable, or unwilling, to actually\u00a0<\/em>say what\u2019s what on the issue.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Finally, my colleague Morning\u2019s Minion wrote, in the comments section to my original post, something along the lines of \u201cwell, Sheen\u2019s no different than John Roberts, who is actually in a position to do something about abortion.\u201d\u00a0 Actually, it is not at all obvious to me that John Roberts \u2014 whose job, of course, is to decide legal cases \u2014 is in a better position to change hearts, minds, and practices on abortion.\u00a0 And, in any event, to observe, as Roberts did, that Roe<\/em> is the law of the land is not to do what\u00a0Mr. Sheen did, i.e., to contend that\u00a0the abortion is not a wrong\u00a0of the kind the law should prevent or discourage.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
