A Quote from &#8220;How Far Can We Go?&#8221; for Natural Family Planning Awareness Week"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>In support of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/issues-and-action\/marriage-and-family\/natural-family-planning\/awareness-week\/index.cfm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">USCCB\u2019s National NFP Awareness Week<\/a>, I\u2019d like to share this excerpt from a book I <a title=\"See our ministry's web page here\" href=\"http:\/\/www.howfarcanwego.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">co-authored with my dear friend and colleague Leah Perrault<\/a> titled <a title=\"Buy the book from the publisher!\" href=\"http:\/\/www.paulistpress.com\/bookView.cgi?isbn=978-0-8091-4726-7\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>How Far Can We Go?\u00a0 A Catholic Guide to Sex and Dating<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>For many people, the Church\u2019s distinction between the moral status of NFP and that of artificial contraception is difficult to understand.\u00a0 \u201cIf Catholics have a good reason to avoid pregnancy,\u201d they wonder, \u201cthen why does the Church care whether they use Natural Family Planning or an artificial means, such as the pill or condoms?\u201d . . .<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eden.co.uk\/images\/300\/9780809147267.jpg\" height=\"359\" width=\"240\">We can start by noting that the question in the previous paragraph presumes that the end justifies the means.\u00a0 In other words, it works on the assumption that if your goal is a good one, then whatever way you try to achieve that goal is also good.\u00a0 The funny thing is that neither the Church nor many people in society accept that reasoning for any other question.\u00a0 We don\u2019t accept it for making money, or for losing weight.\u00a0 We don\u2019t accept it for winning political office, or for helping the poor.\u00a0 We don\u2019t even accept it for getting violent criminals off our streets.\u00a0 According to the moral reasoning used by virtually everyone in society, an act cannot be okay simply because it tries to achieve a goal that is legitimate, or even urgent.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The moral difference between artificial contraception and NFP must lie in how they work, not in what they try to achieve.\u00a0 The real question is \u201cHow does artificial contraception function differently than NFP to achieve the same goal?\u201d\u00a0 To put it simply, artificial contraception removes the procreative potential from sex.\u00a0 In doing so, artificial contraception fails to respect the integrity of the persons and their life-giving actions.\u00a0 Natural Family Panning, which can be used both to avoid and to achieve pregnancy, works by teaching couples to engage in their sexual activity with reference to their fertility and God\u2019s call to parenthood.\u00a0 When it is used to avoid pregnancy, NFP has the same goal as artificial contraception, but it demands a change in lifestyle.\u00a0 Artificial contraception, meanwhile, hopes to accomplish the same goal with as little reference, or change, to the rest of one\u2019s life as possible.\u00a0 One option demands discipline and sacrifice, while the other rejects these attitudes as unnecessarily difficult.\u00a0 In most other areas of life, such as maintaining a healthy weight, it is easy to see that <em>not<\/em> doing things (such as eating junk food) when we don\u2019t want their consequences is simply common sense.\u00a0 The Church reminds us that such logic applies to our sex lives as well.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps the most concise way to express the difference between NFP and artificial contraception is simply this:\u00a0 <em><strong>NFP alters one\u2019s lifestyle to accommodate the nature of sex, while artificial contraception alters the nature of sex to accommodate one\u2019s lifestyle<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/em> (pp. 92-94)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If you liked this post, you might also be interested in:<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"What Openness to Life Does NOT Mean\" href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/voxnova\/2009\/05\/08\/what-%E2%80%98openness-to-life%E2%80%99-does-not-mean\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\">What Openness to Life Does NOT Mean<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Is Sexual Compatibility a Myth?\" href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/voxnova\/2011\/06\/14\/is-sexual-compatibility-a-myth-some-thoughts-on-cohabitation\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\">Is Sexual Compatibility a Myth?
