{"id":27697,"date":"2015-06-21T18:03:00","date_gmt":"2015-06-21T23:03:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/voxnova\/?p=27697"},"modified":"2015-06-21T18:03:00","modified_gmt":"2015-06-21T23:03:00","slug":"forgiveness-is-hell","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/voxnova\/2015\/06\/21\/forgiveness-is-hell\/","title":{"rendered":"Forgiveness is Hell"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>The BBC World Service recently featured some striking coverage of responses to Wednesday\u2019s shooting at a historically black church in Charleston, South Carolina, particularly from within the church community\u00a0itself.\u00a0 I was especially amazed by one attendee of a prayer vigil for the victims (speaking about 32\u00a01\/2 minutes into <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/p02tp3bn\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">this radio program<\/a>) who said of Dylann Roof, who shot and killed nine people at a Bible study:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>What he was going to accomplish, he did the opposite.\u00a0 And so we\u2019re smiling and laughing at him, while yet praying for him.\u00a0 And he can\u2019t stop us from praying for him, and he can\u2019t stop us from loving him.\u00a0 So he\u2019s got to live with black people loving white people, and white people loving black people.\u00a0 And I think that is hell for him.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I heard several things at once in this brief yet potent statement.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->It immediately brought to mind <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/voxnova\/2015\/01\/22\/some-words-about-dr-king-part-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\">what Martin Luther King so powerfully said<\/a> about nonviolent resistance formed by <em>agape<\/em>, which enables one to say to one\u2019s \u201cmost violent opponent\u201d,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>We will match your capacity to inflict suffering by our capacity to endure suffering.\u00a0We will meet your physical force with soul force. And do to us what you will, and we will still love you\u2026. Bomb our homes and threaten our children and as difficult as it is, we will still love you.\u00a0Send your hooded perpetrators and violence into our communities at the midnight hours and drag us out on some wayside road and beat us and leave us half-dead and we will still love you.\u00a0But be assured that we will wear you down by our capacity to suffer.\u00a0And one day we will win our freedom: but we will not only win freedom for ourselves.\u00a0We will so appeal to your heart and your conscience that we will win you in the process\u00a0and our victory will be a double victory.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The spirit of Reverend Dr. King is alive and well in that church, evidenced as well by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-us-canada-33185848\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">representatives of the victims\u2019 families at a court hearing<\/a>, who spoke with both audible pain\u00a0and resolute forgiveness to the young man who had killed their loved ones.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cAnd I think that is hell for him.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This reflects at the same time a deep irony that exists as long as the victory King proclaimed remains a hope as yet unconsummated.\u00a0 It is\u00a0the same\u00a0irony\u00a0that St. Paul pointed to in his letter to the Romans (12:20, quoting Solomon in Proverbs 25:21-22): \u201cIf your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals upon his head.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I recall a similar response to another church shooting some years ago where the pastor, asked if he thought the shooter would go to hell, replied, \u201cHe\u2019s probably been living in his own personal hell for years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Particularly\u00a0apropos of this more recent tragedy is a\u00a0sentence that\u00a0stuck in my mind from\u00a0Rob Bell\u2019s book <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.harpercollins.com\/9780062049643\/love-wins\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Love Wins<\/a><\/em> (which has often been mistakenly\u00a0described as an argument for universalism):<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cA racist would be miserable in the world to come.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Indeed, for someone repelled by the vast\u00a0unity-in-diversity that is the communion of saints, heaven itself would be hell.\u00a0 Already in this world, for someone who chooses to live in the hell of hatred, forgiveness is indeed the most burning response that can be offered \u2013 while always holding out the hope that, for him too, it can be a healing burn, <em>if he allows it to be<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The church and the families that Dylann Roof wounded so horribly are leading the way in praying for him.\u00a0 So let us do the same.<\/p>\n<p>And may love finally have the last laugh.\u00a0 Kyrie eleison.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The BBC World Service recently featured some striking coverage of responses to Wednesday\u2019s shooting at a historically black church in Charleston, South Carolina, particularly from within the church community\u00a0itself.\u00a0 I was especially amazed by one attendee of a prayer vigil for the victims (speaking about 32\u00a01\/2 minutes into this radio program) who said of Dylann [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2932,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[777,272,520,105,15,169,41,648],"tags":[1542],"class_list":["post-27697","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-forgiveness","category-love","category-martin-luther-king-jr","category-nonviolence","category-prophetic-witness","category-racism","category-violence","category-woundedness","tag-charleston-church-shooting"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v21.1 -
