Early awards darling\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ezWiUTXB11A\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">A Birth of a Nation<\/a><\/em>, based on Nat Turner\u2019s bloody, biblically-inspired\u00a0fight against slavery in the 1830s, hits theaters in October. Martin Scorsese\u2019s <em>Silence<\/em>, which focuses on two Jesuit missionaries working in 17th Century Japan, is scheduled to be released this November.<\/p>\n<p>And then there\u2019s Mel Gibson\u2019s <em>Hacksaw Ridge<\/em>, which just released its first poster.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1202 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/wp.sixseeds.production.patheos.com\/watchinggod\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/30\/2016\/07\/hacksaw-ridge-2-1.jpg\" alt=\"hacksaw ridge (2)\" width=\"550\" height=\"848\"><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>From the press release:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Hacksaw Ridge\u00a0is the extraordinary true story of World War II medic Desmond Doss, played by Andrew Garfield (<em>The Amazing Spider-Man<\/em>), who, in Okinawa during the bloodiest battle of WWII, miraculously saved 75 men in a matter of hours without firing or carrying a gun.<\/p>\n<p>He was the only American soldier in WWII to fight on the front lines without a weapon, except the simple prayer he uttered before he single-handedly evacuated the wounded from behind enemy lines, under constant enemy gunfire and artillery bombardment.<\/p>\n<p>Doss\u2019 courage and faith won the admiration of his commanders and fellow soldiers, as he saved the lives of the very men who had persecuted him for refusing to carry a gun. He believed the war was just, but to kill under any circumstance was wrong. Doss was labeled the first conscientious objector (he called himself a \u201cconscientious cooperator\u201d as he volunteered) to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It\u2019s an interesting thematic choice for Gibson as he continues to rehabilitate his career. His work, though often pretty extraordinary, is incredibly violent, too. Now he\u2019s focusing on a character who abhorred violence \u2026 even as he fought in arguably the world\u2019s worst bloodbath.
