I have a friend who is addicted to all things Mac.<\/p>\n
Steve Jobs announced the arrival of the new Mac Air Book two days ago and yesterday my friend negotiated his Christmas present.\u00a0 As a fellow Mac devotee, I am keenly aware of how strongly attractive this all is.\u00a0 In fact, I\u2019ve often thought it is more than a little scary that the company logo is an apple with a bite taken out of it.\u00a0 Great shades of Adam and Eve.\u00a0 But I take refuge in the knowledge that the Hebrew doesn\u2019t actually say it was an apple.<\/p>\n
In giving my friend a hard time about his record-time capitulation to the allure of the newest toy, he responded, \u201cThe thing is we all have our thing.\u201d\u00a0 Never were truer words spoken.<\/p>\n
Jewish and Christian spirituality is hammered out in the real world.\u00a0 From Genesis to Revelation the goodness of creation is asserted.\u00a0 In Genesis with the pronouncement that God\u2019s work was good \u2014 in John\u2019s Apocalypse with the creation of a new earth.\u00a0 It\u2019s no surprise, then, that \u201cwe all have our thing.\u201d<\/p>\n
The key to spiritual balance lies in not allowing our things to have us.\u00a0 Finding that balance is never easy to achieve.\u00a0 That is why some have abandoned the effort to nurture their souls and others have run from the created world.<\/p>\n
Both are soul-killing over-simplifications.<\/p>\n
Live with freedom.\u00a0 Experiment with the balance.<\/p>\n
You will make mistakes.<\/p>\n
But God loves you.\u00a0 God made you a spiritual being.\u00a0 God made the world.\u00a0 God is present to you in both.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
