Should I feel guilty about it?"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>Not all anger is the same:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Anger can be a vague, generalized feeling<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It can be occasioned by a specific set of circumstances<\/li>\n<li>It can arise out of the disparity between what we want and what is<\/li>\n<li>(And what we want can be a healthy, good thing to want\u2026and it might not be)<\/li>\n<li>It can arise out of the disparity between what is and what should be<\/li>\n<li>(And we can be wrong or right about what should be)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We typically mishandle anger<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> By acting out of it unreflectively<\/li>\n<li>Or by repressing it<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And for that reason we have a lot of alternative vocabulary for anger<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>And we tend to talk about some people as having a temper which (while no doubt true)<\/li>\n<li>Obscures the fact that we all get angry<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The reason we mishandle anger lies with:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Our general discomfort with emotion<\/li>\n<li>Negative associations with angry behavior<\/li>\n<li>And negative associations with conflict<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The cleansing of the Temple is an excellent passage to study in this connection<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Because it shows Jesus having an emotion that we do not associate with God<\/li>\n<li>And it points to a fundamental truth:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Anger is not only appropriate at times, it can be a good and necessary thing<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Anger can signal\u2026<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> Clarity<\/li>\n<li>Resolve<\/li>\n<li>The need to act<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The question, of course, is what helps us to measure the appropriateness of our anger<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> The answer lies in noting the difference in our motives<\/li>\n<li>In noting the difference between self-serving and other-serving anger<\/li>\n<li>The difference between ego, pique and something larger<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That\u2019s where the cleansing of the Temple fits in\u2026<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> Jesus embodies the appropriate manifestation of anger<\/li>\n<li>Rooted in the things of God<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There is a message in anger like that<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Don\u2019t be afraid of it<\/li>\n<li>Listen to it<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Not all anger is the same: Anger can be a vague, generalized feeling It can be occasioned by a specific set of circumstances It can arise out of the disparity between what we want and what is (And what we want can be a healthy, good thing to want\u2026and it might not be) It can [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":240,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[3],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-221","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-anger"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v21.1 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>I&#039;m as mad as hell.
