{"id":24,"date":"2010-09-17T18:36:21","date_gmt":"2010-09-17T18:36:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/experts.patheos.com\/expert\/frederickwschmidt\/2010\/09\/17\/the-truth-about-truth-iii-truth-loves\/"},"modified":"2010-09-17T18:36:21","modified_gmt":"2010-09-17T18:36:21","slug":"the-truth-about-truth-iii-truth-loves","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/whatgodwantsforyourlife\/2010\/09\/the-truth-about-truth-iii-truth-loves\/","title":{"rendered":"The truth about truth iii: Truth loves"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>It is common to hear people play truth and love off against one another.\u00a0 Some argue that truth is all that matters.\u00a0 Others argue that love is the only thing that counts.<\/p>\n<p>In the early Christian tradition, however, truth and love are described as necessary and complementary.\u00a0 The reason is clear: Truth without love can be cruel, overbearing, and judgmental.\u00a0 Love in the absence of truth is flaccid and degenerates all to easily into condescension and pity.\u00a0 Without truth, we run the risk of loving one another into a life that is beneath us.<\/p>\n<p>Put another way, truth (at its best) loves.<\/p>\n<p>I have watched people over the years forget this.\u00a0 When they do, they defend their right to their opinion; they deliver messages, they are incapable of conversation; and what they know \u2014 even if they are right from time to time \u2014 is on display.\u00a0 That kind of truth is easily corrupted.\u00a0 It is truth that is capable of stunning arrogance and pride.\u00a0 It is the kind of truth that kills.<\/p>\n<p>Truth that loves is marked by humility.\u00a0 When it is spoken it is offered, clearly and in a forthright way, but never with the intention to hurt or control.<\/p>\n<p>It is a difficult balance to achieve and no one achieves that balance every time.\u00a0 But the flight from truth into love without a truth is not the solution.<\/p>\n<p>Truth loves and love must speak the truth.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It is common to hear people play truth and love off against one another.\u00a0 Some argue that truth is all that matters.\u00a0 Others argue that love is the only thing that counts.
