Psalm 31<\/p>\n
9<\/sup> Be gracious to me, O\u00a0Lord,<\/p>\n for I am in distress;<\/p>\n my eye wastes away from grief,<\/p>\n my soul and body also.<\/p>\n 10<\/sup> For my life is spent with sorrow,<\/p>\n and my years with sighing;<\/p>\n my strength fails because of my misery,<\/p>\n and my bones waste away.<\/p>\n 11<\/sup> I am the scorn of all my adversaries,<\/p>\n a horror to my neighbours,<\/p>\n an object of dread to my acquaintances;<\/p>\n those who see me in the street flee from me.<\/p>\n 12<\/sup> I have passed out of mind like one who is dead;<\/p>\n I have become like a broken vessel.<\/p>\n 13<\/sup> For I hear the whispering of many\u2014<\/p>\n terror all around!\u2014<\/p>\n as they scheme together against me,<\/p>\n as they plot to take my life.<\/p>\n Grief has the power to isolate.\u00a0 It can create a sense of loneliness that leads to despair.\u00a0 As unwelcome as it can be, grief can also be a source of spiritual growth.<\/p>\n But in order to navigate our grief in ways that are life-giving, first we need to recognize certain truths \u2014 some of which will help to neutralize its power to isolate us.<\/p>\n One, grief is universal.\u00a0 For a variety of reasons, grief can have a stronger hold on us from time to time and for some people the experience is far more intense.\u00a0 It can be further complicated by chemical and psychosomatic challenges that vary from person to person that may even require the attention of a physician.\u00a0 But everyone experiences grief sooner of later.<\/p>\n Two, grief is not a sign of spiritual deficiency.\u00a0 Grief can accompany wrong-doing, but its mere existence is not evidence of spiritual deficiency.\u00a0 Even people of considerable spiritual maturity can experience grief.<\/p>\n Three, grief is evidence of the world\u2019s brokenness.\u00a0 The sorrow, anxiety, or sense of loss that we experience in times of grief is a evidence of the world\u2019s brokenness.<\/p>\n Four, grief can even be evidence of the deepening work of God in our lives.\u00a0 Some people have asserted that grief at the loss of a loved one is evidence that we do not believe strongly enough in God.\u00a0 That is, quite simply, dangerous nonsense.\u00a0 We are made to live in intimate connection with God and others.\u00a0 We are also made for life.\u00a0 When we lose someone dear to us, it is a painful reminder of how incomplete that experience is this side of the grave.\u00a0 The more we understand the will of God for us, the more the incompleteness of it all is likely to trigger the experience of grief.<\/p>\n Five, not all grief is the same.\u00a0 Some grief is unavoidable and occurs in the course of life \u2014 the loss of loved ones, our own deaths (if we have some forewarning of them).\u00a0 Some grief can be precipitated by the choices that we make and it is possible in some cases to make amends for those choices.\u00a0 Some grief can spur us on to good work, providing the impetus for efforts on behalf of others and for that reason could be called \u201cgood grief.\u201d\u00a0 Other kinds of grief \u2014 if it is chronic and debilitating \u2014 can be dangerous.<\/p>\n As with so many experiences in the spiritual life, if you are experiencing grief, the ability to name and understand the shape of the experience is the first step to finding freedom .<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Psalm 31 9 Be gracious to me, O\u00a0Lord, for I am in distress; my eye wastes away from grief, my soul and body also. 10 For my life is spent with sorrow, and my years with sighing; my strength fails because of my misery, and my bones waste away. 11 I am the scorn of […]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":240,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[9],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-240","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-grief"],"yoast_head":"\n
