{"id":250,"date":"2010-12-04T12:53:11","date_gmt":"2010-12-04T12:53:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/experts.patheos.com\/expert\/frederickwschmidt\/?p=250"},"modified":"2010-12-04T12:53:11","modified_gmt":"2010-12-04T12:53:11","slug":"grieving-with-hope","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/whatgodwantsforyourlife\/2010\/12\/grieving-with-hope\/","title":{"rendered":"Grieving with hope"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>The deeper healing of our grief is in God\u2019s hands.<\/p>\n<p>All cures are temporary.<\/p>\n<p>Healing is eternal in character.<\/p>\n<p>Cure is particular, focused on a specific issue.<\/p>\n<p>Healing is comprehensive.<\/p>\n<p>That is why therapeutic approaches to any of our struggles \u2014 grief included \u2014 lack the power to address some of our needs at the deepest level.\u00a0 Therapy can teach us to \u201ccope\u201d with our losses or \u201cmanage\u201d them (and that\u2019s a good thing), but the losses remain \u2014 and they await a resolution that lies entirely in God\u2019s hands.<\/p>\n<p>But Christian understandings of the spiritual life are not entirely future-oriented.\u00a0 Eternal life \u2014 life lived out in God\u2019s presence \u2014 is described using the present tense as well as the future.\u00a0 Our spiritual lives are present possession, awaiting fulfillment.\u00a0 Perhaps the best image is of the rising sun at dawn \u2014 the light breaks across the landscape.\u00a0 There are still places where darkness and mist still remain. \u00a0But the light is on the way and there will be a point when the landscape will be filled with it.<\/p>\n<p>So, we grieve, but not without hope.\u00a0 We are living with the dawning light and \u2014 even in our grief \u2014 we continue to live, laugh, and love, confident that our lives belong to God.<\/p>\n<p>We can stay involved in the lives of others.<\/p>\n<p>We can learn to re-invest ourselves in life.<\/p>\n<p>We can practice being present to one another.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The deeper healing of our grief is in God\u2019s hands.
