{"id":332,"date":"2011-01-03T23:02:02","date_gmt":"2011-01-03T23:02:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/experts.patheos.com\/expert\/frederickwschmidt\/?p=332"},"modified":"2011-01-03T23:02:02","modified_gmt":"2011-01-03T23:02:02","slug":"words-to-live-by","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/whatgodwantsforyourlife\/2011\/01\/words-to-live-by\/","title":{"rendered":"Words to live by"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>I love aphorisms \u2014 short, pointed, insightful observations.<\/p>\n<p>It all started with writing speeches for the Optimist Club.\u00a0 They once sponsored \u201coratorical contests\u201d and I loved competing in them.\u00a0 Each year they advertised a new topic and the assignment was to write, memorize, and deliver a speech of five to seven minutes in length.\u00a0 The first year the topic was \u201cOptimism, youth\u2019s greatest asset.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It seems kind of corny now, but it prompted me to think, read, and build my vocabulary.\u00a0 I don\u2019t rely nearly as much on the quotations that I once used in those speeches, but I am still attracted to the sharp, short, observation that has sticking power.\u00a0 That is the genius of proverbs.<\/p>\n<p>The beginning of a new year is a good time to review some of those proverbial bits of wisdom.\u00a0 And, on balance, I think that kind of wisdom is a better bet than a boat load of resolutions that are too easily abandoned in the first week of February.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve tried to identify a shortlist that have spiritual import.\u00a0 Here\u2019s my list.\u00a0 It\u2019s random in its selection and listed in no particular order.\u00a0 If you don\u2019t find one that is helpful to you, feel free to offer one of your own.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If you are going through hell, keep going.\u00a0 Winston Churchill<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>We must be willing to let go of the life we\u2019ve planned to have the life that is waiting for us.\u00a0 E.M.
