{"id":451,"date":"2011-04-14T03:35:53","date_gmt":"2011-04-14T03:35:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/experts.patheos.com\/expert\/frederickwschmidt\/?p=451"},"modified":"2011-04-14T03:35:53","modified_gmt":"2011-04-14T03:35:53","slug":"the-shape-of-the-journey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/whatgodwantsforyourlife\/2011\/04\/the-shape-of-the-journey\/","title":{"rendered":"The shape of the journey"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>We talked with dear friends who have a close relative facing the slow, certain deterioration that characterizes ALS or Lou Gehrig\u2019s disease.\u00a0 Quickly the conversation turned to the question of what our prayers can reasonably include and the purposes of God in a moment like this.\u00a0 It resonated deeply with the news I received today that one of my students died at the end of last month from a rare, aggressive cancer that claimed her life after just 5 or 6 years of active ministry.<\/p>\n<p>If the purpose of life is to secure a relationship with God that makes our lives safe and enjoyable \u2014 and if the Christian journey is about getting God to side with us, fix our problems, and run interference for us \u2014 then both of these stories are a tragic indictment of God and of the Christian faith.\u00a0 But, of course, that isn\u2019t the point according to every deep, well-rooted Christian tradition.<\/p>\n<p>The point of the journey is companionship with God and the purposes of God take shape around the spread of God\u2019s reign over the lives and hearts of humankind.\u00a0 Our well-being \u2014 which is firmly circumscribed by our mortality \u2014 is a secondary consideration.\u00a0 That is why Ignatius of Loyola preferred the term \u201ccompanions of Christ\u201d for the order we know as the Jesuits.\u00a0 The point of the Christian journey is not to secure God\u2019s help with the lives we want to live.\u00a0 It is about living lives that serve the purpose of God.\u00a0 And indicting God for failing to fix our problems is a bit like indicting a general for failing to keep his army out of combat.<\/p>\n<p>Does that mean that God is insensitive to our needs?\u00a0 No.\u00a0 But it does put the shape of the journey into perspective.\u00a0 Occasionally we experience a cure, remission, or a reprieve in this life.\u00a0 But complete healing is an enterprise that awaits us beyond the boundaries of this life.\u00a0 And, whatever may happen to us now is something that can only be navigated by giving our lives back to God in the middle of whatever it is that we are experiencing.<\/p>\n<p>Any interpretation of the Gospel that suggests otherwise misunderstands the shape of the journey.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We talked with dear friends who have a close relative facing the slow, certain deterioration that characterizes ALS or Lou Gehrig\u2019s disease.\u00a0 Quickly the conversation turned to the question of what our prayers can reasonably include and the purposes of God in a moment like this.\u00a0 It resonated deeply with the news I received today [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":240,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[17],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-451","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-spiritual-perspectives"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v21.1 -
