Orthodoxy has become a dirty word.\u00a0 It is treated as a synonym for \u201cnarrow,\u201d \u201cunthinking,\u201d \u201cuncharitable,\u201d \u201cmean-spirited,\u201d \u201cbackward,\u201d and \u201cbenighted.\u201d<\/p>\n
But at root, orthodoxy is not about labeling things right for the sake of labeling them \u2014 much less labeling other things \u201cwrong.\u201d<\/p>\n
It\u2019s about accountability to something and \u2014 even more importantly Someone beyond us.<\/p>\n
A wooden orthodoxy that needs \u201cright belief\u201d as a substitute for that Someone is misguided.\u00a0 But a spiritual orientation that rejects every kind of accountability other than one of its own making is no less misguided.<\/p>\n
