Our anxiety is not imposed on us by force from outside. We impose it on our world and upon one another from within ourselves.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The word meditate comes from the Latin, <em>meditatio, <\/em>which \u2014 among other things \u2014 means \u201cto ponder.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As much as I like the word \u201cponder,\u201d it is helpful think of meditation as the act of \u00a0befriending a thought, wandering around in it, getting familiar with it.\u00a0 In a world that runs through words and images at a breakneck pace, that\u2019s a very different exercise.\u00a0 Our cultural long suit is the emotional flashpoint \u2014 the momentary impression made by words that are quickly replaced by others.\u00a0 By contrast, meditation involves letting an idea or insight grow in us.<\/p>\n<p>In sitting with Merton\u2019s handful of words this week, those words kept giving.\u00a0 Some of that gift included these thoughts:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The word, anxiety is different from the word fear, which is sometimes used as a synonym.<\/li>\n<li>Fear can be and often is specific in nature.\u00a0 Anxiety almost always implies something less well defined \u2014 as much a state of being as a reaction with specific causes.<\/li>\n<li>Hence, anxiety drives us to look for an explanation \u2014 invent one.<\/li>\n<li>For that reason anxiety is a dangerous emotion.\u00a0 One that looks for threats and enemies \u2014 one that fixes on them randomly, with little reason and even less deliberation.<\/li>\n<li>As such anxiety is the enemy of faith, trust, and the God-given peace that faith and trust can nurture.<\/li>\n<li>Anxiety can lead us quickly out of that space in which we can hear God \u2014 offering us what may appear to be good reasons for faithless decisions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There is more here.\u00a0 But meditation is not just about the elaboration of ideas.<\/p>\n<p>It is about a space in which ideas and insights nurture a new way of living and being.
