{"id":62,"date":"2011-12-31T05:52:00","date_gmt":"2011-12-31T05:52:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/whatsheread\/?p=62"},"modified":"2011-12-31T05:52:00","modified_gmt":"2011-12-31T05:52:00","slug":"the-litigators-by-john-grisham","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/whatsheread\/2011\/12\/31\/the-litigators-by-john-grisham\/","title":{"rendered":"The Litigators by John Grisham"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>David Zinc is a Harvard Law grad who has a nervous breakdown on his way to work.\u00a0 And you wouldn\u2019t blame him for feeling a little claustrophobic in his downtown Chicago law firm, a place where he makes big bucks but is so busy he can\u2019t spend the money.<\/p>\n<p>He ends up at a bar, and then at a dump of a law firm called Finley &amp; Figg. \u00a0Because David was drunk from his nervous breakdown and consequent time at the bar, he sees opportunity at this law firm, even if they do advertise on bingo chips.<\/p>\n<p>The lawyers at Finley &amp; Figg spend their time \u201chustling injury cases, a daily grind that required little skill or creativity and would never be considered cool or sexy. Profits were as elusive as status. The firm was small because it couldn\u2019t afford to grow. It was selective only because no one wanted to work there, including the two men who owned it. . . . With a Vietnamese massage parlor to its left and a lawn mower repair shop to its right, it was clear at a casual glance that Finley &amp; Figg was not prospering.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David\u2019s impressions are right.\u00a0 The secretary, Rochelle, is resentful, lazy, and perhaps the most competent employee at the firm. The senior partner, Oscar, is married to a horrible woman he dreams of divorcing. And the junior partner, Wally, is an alcoholic who literally runs out the door when he hears an ambulance \u2013 something that happens with great regularity because the firm is conveniently situated near a dangerous intersection.<\/p>\n<p>You know those terrible lawyers that advertise on billboards or TV?\u00a0 That\u2019s not Finley &amp; Figg.\u00a0 They can\u2019t even afford a billboard, and David is so invigorated by the idea of freedom that he accepts a job there.\u00a0 (The fact that they offered this drunk Harvard Law grad a job says a great deal about the firm\u2019s standards.)<\/p>\n<p>Suddenly, however, the firm jumps into a class-action suit against \u201cBig Pharma\u201d \u2013 the makers of a drug called Krayoxx, which fights cholesterol and has been causing heart attacks and strokes.<\/p>\n<p>Or has it?<\/p>\n<p>The Litigators is a delightful read, especially if you \u2013 or someone you love \u2013 is one.\u00a0 I picked it up because I\u2019m married to a man named David who is also a Harvard Law grad.\u00a0 Though he\u2019s not an ambulance chaser, the book did a great job of showing how the law can be used for ill or good.<\/p>\n<p>Plus, it\u2019s a page turner!<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Leave a comment below for a chance to win a copy of this book!\u00a0 Not only will you be entered to win a copy of the book, you will also receive weekly e-zines from SixSeeds Family Portal at Patheos which will announce the winner and have more giveaway information!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em> <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Why not read it in preparation for the debut of The Firm on NBC.\u00a0 The new television show will begin on <\/em><\/strong><strong><em>Sunday, January 8 at 9 PM \/ 8 PM Central on NBC and is based on Grisham\u2019s #1 Best Selling book.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>David Zinc is a Harvard Law grad who has a nervous breakdown on his way to work.\u00a0 And you wouldn\u2019t blame him for feeling a little claustrophobic in his downtown Chicago law firm, a place where he makes big bucks but is so busy he can\u2019t spend the money.
