Four seems just large enough that those moms with fewer children (especially just one or two) make much over my brood and my seemingly supermom abilities (ha!). And four is just enough to give me an ounce of street cred with the moms of the real large families. Four masquerades carefully between.<\/p>\n<p>In truth, four is really no harder than one or two (especially since they entertain each other\u2014even if it\u2019s by fighting!) and four is just few enough for me to sometimes, though very rarely, see the bottom of the laundry hamper. We do have to be creative when checking into hotels. (\u201cWhat? Another child? Oh, no, sir, that\u2019s my daughter\u2019s life-size doll.\u201d) But we do not have to purchase a Suburban or even think about a fifteen-passenger van.<\/p>\n<p>So having heard the refrain \u201cI don\u2019t know how you do it! I can barely manage two children!\u201d more than once, I was intrigued by Simcha Fisher\u2019s open letter \u201cTo the Mother of Only Child\u201d in the National Catholic Register.<\/p>\n<p>Simcha, who now has nine children, writes poignantly that the mother of only one child finds mothering hard because mothering\u00a0<em>is<\/em> hard. And those first years, when a woman usually only has one child, when she is\u00a0<em>becoming<\/em> a mother, are especially difficult. She says,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>To become a mother, I had to learn how to care about someone more than I did about myself, and that was terrible.\u00a0 But who I am now is something more terrible:\u00a0 the protector who can\u2019t always protect; the one with arms that are designed to hold, always having to let go.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Dear mother of only one child, don\u2019t blame yourself for thinking that your life is hard.\u00a0 You\u2019re suffering now because you\u2019re turning into a new woman, a woman who is never allowed to be alone.\u00a0 For what?\u00a0 Only so that you can become strong enough to be a woman who will be left.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Simcha\u2019s beautiful <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncregister.com\/blog\/to-the-mother-with-only-one-child#ixzz1kLnxjtIe\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">letter<\/a> will leave you holding your child\u2013or children\u2013a little tighter and loving them a little more. And maybe you will find yourself loving them not just for who they are, but for who they have helped you become.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I do believe I have the perfect number of children\u2013four.
