When I translated the text, I compared it to the Cleary version and found many details that could be rendered differently, and in my view, more in line with actual Zen practice.<\/div>\n

Offering instruction, saying<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Take hold of the universe, not leaking a bit. Cut off the myriad flows, not sparing even a tiny trickle. Open your mouth \u2013 mistake; conjecture and at once \u2013 fall short. Yet, say, what is the eye that passes through the <\/span>barrier<\/span>?<\/span><\/div>\n

\u8209\u3002Y\u00fanm\u00e9n said, \u201cEach and everyone is radiant light. Look for it and it is dark, dark.<\/strong><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

What is everyone\u2019s radiant light?\u201d<\/strong><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

When you look \u2013 blind.<\/em><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Yu\u00e1nw\u00f9\u2019s Commentary<\/span><\/h3>\n

Within the room, Y\u00fanm\u00e9n offered words to guide people, \u201cAll you people standing on your feet, each and every one of you is a piece of radiant light (<\/span>k\u014dmy\u014d<\/span>). Now, as in the distant past, its soaring radiance vanishes in seeing and knowing. Although you are radiant light, when asked to show it, you don\u2019t understand. Isn\u2019t this place dark, dark?\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

For twenty years, he offered this instruction, yet there were none who understood his meaning. Later, Xi\u0101ngl\u00edn asked for a saying on behalf of others (<\/span>daigo<\/span>). M\u00e9n said, \u201cKitchen hall (<\/span>kuin<\/span>), the triple gate (<\/span>sanmon<\/span>).\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

He also said, \u201cA good thing is not as good as no thing.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Usually, his <\/span>daigo<\/span> were just one line, so why are there two here? The first line acts like a brief opening of the one narrow path, teaching you to see. \u00a0If you are a singular person, as soon as you hear this, you pick it up, get up, and go.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Y\u00fanm\u00e9n feared people would languish here, so he also said, \u201cA good thing is not as good as no thing.\u201d According with the previous line, he thus sweeps you away.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Nowadays, people just hear \u201cradiant light\u201d raised, then with glaring eyes, they say, \u201cThere is the kitchen hall. There is the triple gate.\u201d For the time being, have no dealings with such people.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Therefore, the saying, \u201cDiscern the meaning of the hook, do not accept the zero point.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
This matter is not present in the eye and it is not present in the object. You must cut off awareness and seeing, forgetting gain and loss \u2013 pure, utterly naked, unattached. Each and every person must go up to the divide and investigate thoroughly, attaining for the first time.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Y\u00fanm\u00e9n said, \u201c<\/span>Within<\/span> the day\u2019s comings and goings, people distinguish <\/span>within<\/span> the day. Suddenly it\u2019s midnight and there is no light from the sun or moon. If this is a place you\u2019ve been before, you know the layout. If this is a place you\u2019ve never been, you can\u2019t find anything. Still, what can you get?\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cThe Harmony of Sameness and Difference\u201d<\/span> says, \u201cWithin light, there is darkness. Do not see it as darkness. Within darkness, there is light. Do not meet it as light.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n

If you dwell completely in light or dark, yet, say, is it something?Therefore, the saying, \u201cThe Mind flower radiates light, illuminating the realms in the ten directions.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n

P\u00e1nsh\u0101n said, \u201cLight does not shine on objects. Objects do not exist. Light and objects forgotten, who exactly goes and returns?\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

It is also said, \u201cThis very seeing and hearing is not seeing and hearing. There is no other sound or color presented either, noble one. When singularly within, it seems there is completely nothing.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Discrimination or no discrimination \u2013 what hinders essence-function? Only fully understand this last line and you can go ahead and play freely. <\/span>Afterall, you won\u2019t be able to transcend death <\/span>and<\/span> make a living. A person of old said, \u201cAll things stand on the root which is baseless.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

You must not go here to manage light and shadow, to manage your spirit. Also, you must not make an understanding of nothingness. A person of old said, \u201cIt is better to have a view of existence the size of Mt. Sumeru than to allow a view of nothingness the size of a mustard seed.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Many practitioners of the two vehicles slide into this one-sided view.<\/span><\/div>\n

Xu\u011bd\u00f2u\u2019s Verse\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n

Row after row of unique shining selves<\/strong><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Every manifestation, all things connected. Guest and host practicing together as friends. He turns the noses of everyone in the line. Blind people, what are you doing?<\/em><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Acting as sovereign, permeated by one ray of light<\/strong><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Far more than one ray of light. Ten suns shine together. Let go of the Way of one ray of light and obtain at once.<\/em><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
When looking, who doesn\u2019t see?<\/strong><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Blind. You can\u2019t always hold yourself up with a fence or feel along a wall. Two blind people, three blind people.<\/em><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Seeing not seeing<\/strong><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Both sides entirely abide in zazen. Blind.<\/em><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Enter the Buddha Hall, riding the ox backwards!<\/strong><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Inside the triple gate, gassh\u014d. I strike and say, \u201cTurn any direction and go! Return the keyword to me.\u201d Xu\u011bd\u00f2u turns toward the ghost cave to make a living. At noon, the midnight drum is struck.<\/em><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Yu\u00e1nw\u00f9\u2019s Commentary<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n
\n
\u201cRow after row of unique shining selves\u201d Everyone\u2019s self, right under foot \u2013 the source is this one beam of radiant light. It\u2019s only when it\u2019s searched for in the common way that the result is dark.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
<\/div>\n
Therefore, great master Y\u00fanm\u00e9n, together with each of you, expresses radiant light right in front of your face. Yet what is the radiant light of living beings, of all people? \u201cKitchen hall, triple gate.\u201d This is Y\u00fanm\u00e9n\u2019s solitary luminous place!<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

P\u00e1nsh\u0101n said, \u201cThe solitary halo of the natural mind, pure and bright as the moon, swallows ten thousand appearances.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

This singularly and exactly exposes the true solitary constant. Then, together with the sovereign, it shines through a single ray of light. <\/span>But due to the fear that people would become attached and make a home in \u201ckitchen hall, triple gate,\u201d then accordingly, the kitchen hall and triple gate will be temporarily removed.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
A morning flower on the withered tree has no shadow. <\/span>The sun has set, the moon is dark. The heavens, the earth, the ground of bodhisattva practice are extinguished \u2013 complete darkness.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Still, all people see! When looking, who doesn\u2019t see? Yet, say, who doesn\u2019t see?<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
It\u2019s like above, \u201cWithin light, there is darkness\u2026within darkness, there is light.\u201d In each case, \u201cthe front and back foot\u201d clarify the self.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Xu\u011bd\u00f2u\u2019s \u201cSee not seeing,\u201d versifies, \u201cA good thing is not as good as no thing.\u201d Become seeing and not seeing. Become light and not light. \u201cEnter the Buddha Hall, riding the ox backwards!\u201d Enter the inside of the black lacquer bucket! You yourself must ride the ox into the Buddha Hall. Then you\u2019ll see the radical reason for this saying.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
