And how would one tell if it is enough?\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'> Trevor has been a monastic and resident in various Zen shops for about 6.5 years and is now looking for gainful employment so that he can move out. His blog is over at <a href=\"http:\/\/thebigoldoaktree.blogspot.com\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Big Oak Tree<\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>And although I can\u2019t speak for him or anyone, like everybody else who\u2019s done time, <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>I know the issue<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>. One way of resolving the \u201chow long can I stick it out\u201d nagging question is to relieve the anxiety by skipping out \u2013 now.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>Another is to distract oneself somehow, anyhow. Or then there\u2019s always bucking up and doing the practice.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>Well, how much is enough? How about when you\u2019ve resolved the matter of birth and death in whatever way led you to jump into monastic living in the first place?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>Then the going up the mountain turns and going down the mountain is effortless.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>It\u2019s not just in the story books \u2026 but real life tends to be much less clear.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>The Question is a tough one particularly in systems that don\u2019t offer clear verification. You gotta be really confident yourself to head out down the mountain. And it is lonely out there, even if you\u2019re running off with your sweetheart.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>There are many good reasons to leave monastic living. First off, worldly work is really important for Zen priests and for several reasons, just as important as monastic training.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>Zen systems are unreliable and it\u2019s wise to have a safety net \u2013 a career and a retirement plan for starters. The national net might well be gone soon and even the larger Zen institutions don\u2019t seem so well posed to take care of a lot of old priests.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>Second, speaking from personal experience, it can be very powerful to step into the body of a normal person and live that life. Like the guy in <i><a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=6sSU11MyO8gC&amp;q=razor%27s+edge&amp;dq=razor%27s+edge&amp;hl=en&amp;ei=rN2fTLrKB9OlngeJy_W8DQ&amp;sa=X&amp;oi=book_result&amp;ct=result&amp;resnum=1&amp;ved=0CC8Q6AEwAA\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Razor\u2019s Edge<\/a> <\/i>who winds up driving cab.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>In my chosen line of work, to see the biting suffering of those in the underclasses has been really sobering. I thought I grew up on the other side of the tracks but there\u2019s a lot tougher upbringings than mine.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>Turns out there\u2019s several wrong sides of the tracks. Lots of people go day to day with an intensity of suffering<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'> \u2013 just relieved they didn\u2019t get shot today, for example \u2013<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'> that you don\u2019t often run into in the upper middle way. No offense intended, dear reader.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>Thirdly, when we surround ourselves with like-minded \u201cspiritual\u201d people day and night, we can get even more pampered and self-absorbed. Most people are not into the overt spiritual trip in the way that many folks in Zen centers are so forget about nicey nice when working out there. Your degree of enlightenment may not impress so get over it already.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>Finally, it is really difficult to be free when one is institutionalized for long periods, just about as difficult as raising kids, paying the mortgage, health insurance, and repairing the dang Craftsman Rotary Lawn Mower with a whacky carburetor (and an owner\u2019s manual that cautions, \u201cYour carburetor is not adjustable\u201d).\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>Just reading the owner\u2019s manual gives me a little shiver of monastic yearning\u2026.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"blogger-post-footer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/tracker\/4330911338438640912-547605343645179407?l=wildfoxzen.blogspot.com\" alt=\"\"><\/div>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>First off, the above isn\u2019t me \u2026 my refrigerator has a lot more in it and I\u2019ve got fifteen years on the dude.
