Go figure.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>The issue of enlightenment (or kensho or satori or my personal favorite, verification) experiences has been kicked around again over on Brad Warner\u2019s Hardcore blog (with many hundreds of comments), James Ford\u2019s Monkey Mind and beyond.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>Brad tends to kick such things down. James tends to kick them up. I\u2019m with my buddy James on this one.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>Simply and personally put, verification experiences have been very important for me.\u00a0 Never the end of the road but pointers to the work that might be done.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>\u201cSeeing that there\u2019s nothing to do, rolling up our sleeves and going to work,\u201d said Gary Snyder, I believe.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>Without them, <a href='https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/library\/buddhism' target='_blank'>Buddhism<\/a> is just another belief set with people yabbering on in idle speculation \u2013 a virtual hemorrhoid support group (whether it be composed of Zen teachers or students) for those who have pristine assholes (my regrets for the questionable metaphor!).\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>Of course, there are issues with verification experiences, like how they\u2019re all transitory too, how we can get all greedy and stupid while chasing after them, and how we can get hung up on them and all high and arrogant. Oh, and how we can\u2019t control their depth or frequency and that\u2019s a pisser.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>Yeah, well, those complaints also apply to lots of wonderful things, like love and paychecks, but we somehow learn to work through the kinks.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>Here\u2019s a talk by a Zen teacher I like a lot, Genjo Marinello, \u201cMu and Impermanence,\u201d (<a href=\"http:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/us\/podcast\/chobo-jis-podcast\/id78149892\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">click here and go to #5<\/a>) that says it very much like I see it.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>And, hey, find out for yourself (and confirm it with a teacher who knows such things) if you haven\u2019t already and don\u2019t get distracted or despondent or nihilistic by listening to people who talk about hemorrhoids but haven\u2019t suffered them. \u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"blogger-post-footer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/tracker\/4330911338438640912-2884610745016736585?l=wildfoxzen.blogspot.com\" alt=\"\"><\/div>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I enjoyed the comments to my last post about Zen priests (whoops, \u201cpractitioners,\u201d I mean) although I never expected so many on that topic.
