Other religions and belief systems seemed to be about belief either in that which could not be verified experientially or in a selection of facts from which a flow of logic ensued but from which other conclusions could be drawn.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'><span style=\"font-size: large\">Today, some 33 years later, I stumbled on a wonderful Bhikku Bodhi talk on the <i>Canki Sutta<\/i> in which this very issue is addressed. Because it\u2019s the day the Buddha\u2019s birthday is celebrated (in the Japanese tradition) and because it might have some relevance for others, I\u2019ll share a bit from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.accesstoinsight.org\/tipitaka\/mn\/mn.095x.than.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Thanissaro Bhikkhu translation<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-size: large\"><br><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>There are five things that can turn out in two ways in the here-&amp;-now. Which five? Conviction, liking, unbroken tradition, reasoning by analogy, &amp; an agreement through pondering views. These are the five things that can turn out in two ways in the here-&amp;-now. Now some things are firmly held in conviction and yet vain, empty, &amp; false. Some things are not firmly held in conviction, and yet they are genuine, factual, &amp; unmistaken. Some things are well-liked\u2026 truly an unbroken tradition\u2026 well-reasoned\u2026 Some things are well-pondered and yet vain, empty, &amp; false. Some things are not well-pondered, and yet they are genuine, factual, &amp; unmistaken.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>In these cases it isn\u2019t proper for a knowledgeable person who safeguards the truth to come to a definite conclusion, \u2018Only this is true; anything else is worthless.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/i><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif;font-size: large'><\/span><\/p>\n<p>A little later, the brahmin Bharadvaja, the sutta\u2019s protagonist, asks the Buddha about how direct experience of the truth is possible and the following dialogue unfolds in which the Buddha offers a view of the path. <i><\/i><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe ask Master Gotama about the quality most helpful for the final attainment of the truth.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cExertion is most helpful for the final attainment of the truth, Bharadvaja. If one didn\u2019t make an exertion, one wouldn\u2019t finally attain the truth. Because one makes an exertion, one finally attains the truth. Therefore, exertion is most helpful for the final attainment of the truth.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut what quality is most helpful for exertion? We ask Master Gotama about the quality most helpful for exertion.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cContemplating is most helpful for exertion, Bharadvaja. If one didn\u2019t contemplate, one wouldn\u2019t make an exertion. Because one contemplates, one makes an exertion. Therefore, contemplating is most helpful for exertion.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut what quality is most helpful for contemplating?\u2026\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing willing\u2026 If one weren\u2019t willing, one wouldn\u2019t contemplate\u2026\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut what quality is most helpful for being willing?\u2026\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cDesire\u2026 If desire didn\u2019t arise, one wouldn\u2019t be willing\u2026\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut what quality is most helpful for desire?\u2026\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cComing to an agreement through pondering dhammas\u2026 If one didn\u2019t come to an agreement through pondering dhammas, desire wouldn\u2019t arise\u2026\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut what quality is most helpful for coming to an agreement through pondering dhammas?\u2026\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cPenetrating the meaning\u2026 If one didn\u2019t penetrate the meaning, one wouldn\u2019t come to an agreement through pondering dhammas\u2026\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut what quality is most helpful for penetrating the meaning?\u2026\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cRemembering the Dhamma\u2026 If one didn\u2019t remember the Dhamma, one wouldn\u2019t penetrate the meaning\u2026\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut what quality is most helpful for remembering the Dhamma?\u2026 \u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cHearing the Dhamma\u2026 If one didn\u2019t hear the Dhamma, one wouldn\u2019t remember the Dhamma\u2026\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut what quality is most helpful for hearing the Dhamma?\u2026 \u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cLending ear\u2026 If one didn\u2019t lend ear, one wouldn\u2019t hear the Dhamma\u2026\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut what quality is most helpful for lending ear?\u2026 \u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrowing close\u2026 If one didn\u2019t grow close, one wouldn\u2019t lend ear\u2026\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut what quality is most helpful for growing close?\u2026 \u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cVisiting\u2026 If one didn\u2019t visit, one wouldn\u2019t grow close\u2026\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut what quality is most helpful for visiting? We ask Master Gotama about the quality most helpful for visiting.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cConviction is most helpful for visiting, Bharadvaja. If conviction [in a person] didn\u2019t arise, one wouldn\u2019t visit [that person]. Because conviction arises, one visits.
