Here\u2019s a poem by Katagiri Roshi that I found last night<\/span><\/span> on an aging piece of notebook paper in the old guy\u2019s handwriting \u2013 with copious notes in Japanese on the back<\/span><\/span> \u2013 while going through some old files. <\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I tend not to organize files very well and the virtue of this is sometimes making wild discoveries. This is one. <\/span><\/span>Don\u2019t remember how I got it but it was his working draft \u2013 lines are crossed out as he tried again and again in some cases.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019ve interspersed some photographs of Roshi taken by Jim Dildine back at MZMC in 1986 that Jim recently shared with several old Katagiri students. Thank you, Jim.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Whether practicing or not,<\/span><\/span>
Whether studying or not,<\/span><\/span>
Whether succeeding or not,<\/span><\/span>
Everyone without exception<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/a><\/div>\n

Nakedly being born on the earth,<\/span><\/span>
nakedly standing on the earth,<\/span><\/span>
nakedly walking on the earth,<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>
nakedly returning to the earth.<\/span><\/span>
There is no novelty but to do so.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

For all that,<\/span><\/span>
in rainy day, he feels blue.<\/span><\/span>
In sunny day, he is bent on frolic.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

When being scolded and rebuked,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>
he flies rapidly into a rage.<\/span><\/span>
When being praised,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>
he becomes easily a push over for flattery.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

For all his fabrications,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>
tumbling down and getting hurt,<\/span><\/span>
he ends in shrieking and wreaking his anger on everyone.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

What shall I do?<\/span><\/span>
I wonder why he simply cannot go to work<\/span><\/span>
With an umbrella up if it rains,<\/span><\/span>
Just as a woman diver<\/span><\/span> for pearls<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
