We\u2019re a small group and the people who are here are here because they want to be here.That clears the energy field enormously. <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'> Seems like that would always be the case \u2013 but it isn\u2019t. <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>Anyway, when I offer a focus, gosh, they really pick it up. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\">The piece that\u2019s on my mind now is about how Dogen defines extensive study, the \u201c\u2026study and penetration of the ultimate limit \u2026 is \u2018I always care for this.'\u201d See more of the passage below in my previous post or <a href=\"http:\/\/hcbss.stanford.edu\/research\/projects\/sztp\/translations\/shobogenzo\/translations\/henzan\/translation.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">click here<\/a> for the whole fascicle.<\/span><\/p>\n<div style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'><span style=\"font-size: large\">\u201cI always care for this\u201d refers to a moment when a monk asked Dongshan, \u201cWhich of the three bodies of Buddha doesn\u2019t fall into any category?\u201d Or what is the ultimate limit? What is freedom from the world of this and that? Dongshan said, \u201cI always care for this.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\">The ultimate limit manifests in response to our caring for the details of our lives. Freedom from the world of this and that comes in embracing this and that. Planning a meal, cutting the onion, heating the oil. This is what we\u2019ll be doing in the 90-day training.<\/span><br><span style=\"font-size: large\"> <\/span><br><span style=\"font-size: large\">Bielefeldt, the translator, notes that the character that he translates as \u201cto care for\u201d could also be rendered, <span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>\u201c\u2019to entertain,\u2019 \u2018be intimate with;\u2019 but might also be understood as \u2018to take seriously.'\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>Katagiri Roshi translated the line as \u201cI am always close to this.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>To study and penetrate the ultimate limit also to study and be engulfed by the ultimate limit. Zen flips around like this and that.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>When we care for the ultimate limit, we are intimate with it. It is so close that we are the host and entertain our guest.
