First up was James Howard Kunstler from <i>The Sun<\/i>, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thesunmagazine.org\/issues\/406\/the_decline_and_fall_of_the_suburban_empire\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Decline and Fall of the Suburban Empire<\/a>.\u201d Sayeth Kunstler,<\/span><i><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\"><i><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>The peak-oil problem means that we can no longer expect to run an economy based on never-ending growth, which means ultimately that we can\u2019t service our debts at any level \u2014 personal, corporate, governmental. We\u2019re comprehensively broke.<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>That may not strike you as strikingly new but the guy\u2019s been singing this song for years. I\u2019ll spare you the details but his view is really sobering about the possibilities of returning to \u201cnormal.\u201d And in his view, the new normal won\u2019t arrive for a long time after massive adjustments revitalize the local economy.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>The second piece was from the current <i>Atlantic <\/i>by James Fallows, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/doc\/by\/james_fallows\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">After the Crash: How America Can Rise Again<\/a>.\u201d To over simplify, Fallows thinks most of our systems are in pretty good shape <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>(he ignores peak oil) <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>except for our government, \u201c\u2026old and broken and dysfunctional, and may even be beyond repair.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>\u201cThat is the American tragedy of the early 21st century: a vital and self-renewing culture that attracts the world\u2019s talent, and a governing system that increasingly looks like a joke.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>So what does the <a href='https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/library\/buddhism' target='_blank'>dharma<\/a> have to say about our predicament? A lot \u2013 but just one point for now.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>Years ago, when old Katagiri was still around, we studied the <i>Lotus Sutra <\/i>carefully from beginning to end.<i> <\/i>In that sutra-less sutra, the Buddha predicts everybody\u2019s buddhahood. Faith in the <i>Lotus Sutra<\/i> hinges, from this view, on the one single point that we\u2019re all moving toward the big B, much like <\/span><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pierre_Teilhard_de_Chardin\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Teilhard de Chardin\u2019s<\/a> philosophy.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>The doubting Thomas that I was (and still\u2026) had a hard time with this. \u201cRoshi,\u201d I said, \u201cmost of the evidence points in the other direction at this point in time (and that was ~1985!).\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>\u201cMaybe so,\u201d he said, \u201cbut faith in buddhadharma is not an idea or an emotion. Faith is action. So just do something small everyday to benefit all sentient beings, anyway, something small. That\u2019s all we can do, dropping one drop of ink in the universal pool.
