In the Monday night study group, we\u2019re looking at Dogen\u2019s<\/span> <\/b>\u201cThirty-Seven Wingsof Enlightenment.\u201d <\/b>The thirty-seven wings are the four foundations of mindfulness, the four proper exertions, the four steps to magical powers, the five roots, the five powers, the seven factors of enlightenment, and the noble eightfold path<\/a>.\u00a0 Here\u2019s the detail: click<\/a>.<\/span><\/div>\n

Zen teachers in Dogen\u2019s day usually didn\u2019t take up commenting on the elements of the Buddha\u2019s original teaching so this fascicle is quite odd \u2013 even before he gets rolling.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n

In the first paragraph of the<\/span> Tanahashi and Levitt translation we find this sentence tucked in the middle:<\/span>\u00a0<\/i><\/span><\/div>\n

Climbing and descending [<\/i><\/span>the thirty-seven wings of enlightenment is]<\/i><\/span> like twining vines is furthertwining vines of the fundamental point.\u00a0<\/i><\/span><\/div>\n

The fundamental point, the so-called genjokoan<\/i>, <\/i>is the real deal. The truth of our lives. This truth gushes forth through our alive engagement with the dharma<\/a> in all it\u2019s particulars. Up and down, back and forth, high and low, grasping and letting go. Body. Breath. Mist.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
