Ken Port is a law professor and an expert in international intellectual property law, especially of the Japanese variety. <br><\/span><\/span><br><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>A few years ago he became really interested in Article 9, the \u201cpacificist\u201d article of the Japanese constitution, when he noticed that the English translation differed from the Japanese \u2013 the former much more clearly prohibiting the Japanese from re-arming and the latter being quite open to \u201cinterpretation.\u201d Seems that old General MacArthur (who imposed the constitution during the American occupation) got beaten at his own game.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>One of the interesting aspects of this for me is how we can believe one thing and be doing something quite different at the same time. This phenomena shows up both collectively and individually and has been very important for me to deal with directly in my own life and practice.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>One news flash about this came from the woman who was my lover for a few years some twenty years back, when she noticed, \u201cYou\u2019re quite uneven, you know?\u201d At the time, I didn\u2019t know. <br><\/span><\/span><br><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>In terms of Japan\u2019s pacifism, most people (Japanese and otherwise) believe that they are prohibited from having a military while in fact they have the fourth or fifth largest military in the world. In terms of America, we tell ourselves that we\u2019re environmentalists while we\u2019re the biggest polluters. We tell ourselves that we\u2019re a wealthy country while 20,000 people <b>a day<\/b> go on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/11\/29\/us\/29foodstamps.html?hp\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">food stamps<\/a> (adding to the 36 million already receiving help) and while we\u2019re nearing bankruptcy.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>The esteemed Professor Port (p. 78-79) explains this in part in terms of the Japanese terms \u201ctatemae\u201d and \u201chonne.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>Tatemae<i> is \u201ca principle; a rule; a public position. <\/i>Honne<i> is \u201cone\u2019s real intention; one\u2019s true motive.\u201d That is, <\/i>tatemae<i> describes what you tell the outside world; honne describes what your true feeling or intention might be.<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>Sometimes, though, our true intention is (perhaps skillfully) hidden even from ourselves. If you\u2019re interested in this aspect, you might look at an early Daniel Goleman book, <i>Vital Lies, Simple Truths: The Psychology of Self-Deception <\/i>(<a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=R_jF5yUjYSEC&amp;printsec=frontcover&amp;dq=goleman+vital#v=onepage&amp;q=&amp;f=false\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">click here <\/a>for a limited view in Google Books)<i>. <\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>Or we might together just sit quietly in zazen and reflect our life honestly, allowing hidden areas to be lluminated.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>\u201cLately,\u201d wrote one student recently, \u201csitting is bringing up so much of my past karma.\u00a0\u00a0There are little moments of shock like an electrical jolt.\u00a0 My past karma is endless.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'><i>Let the young rain of tears come.<\/i><\/span><\/span><br><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'><i>Let the calm hands of grief come.<\/i><\/span><\/span><br><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'><i>It\u2019s not all as evil as you think.<\/i><\/span><\/span><br><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>So writes the Norwegian poet Rolf Jacobsen (trs., Robert Bly).<i>\u00a0<\/i><\/span><\/span><br><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'> <\/span><\/span><br><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>A friend to whom we can confess our duplicity is also helpful.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>Goleman concludes, \u201cSomewhere between the two poles \u2013 living a life of vital lies and speaking simple truths \u2013 there lies a skillful mean, a path of sanity and survival.\u201d<\/span><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'><i>\u00a0<\/i> <br><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"blogger-post-footer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/tracker\/4330911338438640912-6381780309563441182?l=wildfoxzen.blogspot.com\" alt=\"\"><\/div>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This holiday weekend I\u2019ve been reading my brother\u2019s new book, Transcending Law: The Unintended Life of Article 9 of the Japanese Constitution.
