{"id":24,"date":"2011-09-18T08:24:00","date_gmt":"2011-09-18T08:24:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/wildfoxzen\/2011\/09\/octopus-is-free-becoming-mu-through-prayer\/"},"modified":"2011-09-18T08:24:00","modified_gmt":"2011-09-18T08:24:00","slug":"octopus-is-free-becoming-mu-through-prayer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/wildfoxzen\/2011\/09\/octopus-is-free-becoming-mu-through-prayer.html","title":{"rendered":"Octopus is Free: Becoming Mu through Prayer"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both;text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-2gih_Y01FsY\/TnXsshbibpI\/AAAAAAAABlU\/AXEiky_SBaA\/s1600\/Octopus-tattoo.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-2gih_Y01FsY\/TnXsshbibpI\/AAAAAAAABlU\/AXEiky_SBaA\/s400\/Octopus-tattoo.jpg\" width=\"280\"><\/a><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>In my email this morning, I find this question:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'><span style=\"font-size: large\"><br><\/span><\/div>\n<div style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'><span style=\"font-size: large\">\u201cHow does one become one with Mu?\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n<div style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'><\/div>\n<div style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'><span style=\"font-size: large\">There is no way, really, and each of us must find the way.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'><\/div>\n<div style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'><span style=\"font-size: large\">Indeed, a common experience while working with mu, is for mu to seem like the island in the <i>Pirates of the Caribbean<\/i> film that you can\u2019t find unless you\u2019ve already been there.<\/span>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\">Fortunately, each of us and all living beings is already there.<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<div style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'><\/div>\n<div style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'><span style=\"font-size: large\">At the same time, there are many pointers to one becoming one with mu in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Book-Mu-Essential-Writings-Important\/dp\/0861716434\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Book of Mu.<\/a><\/span><\/div>\n<div style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'><\/div>\n<div style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'><span style=\"font-size: large\"> If you\u2019re interested in the question, to complement wholehearted zazen and inquiry with a teacher, you might study this book carefully.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'><\/div>\n<div style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'><span style=\"font-size: large\">But when I read the question this morning, I was reminded of a dialogue I had with Katagiri-roshi that appeared in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Keep-Me-Your-Heart-While\/dp\/B005HKSERE\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1316351679&amp;sr=1-1\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><i>Keep Me In Your Heart Awhile<\/i><\/a> (now just $5.74 on Amazon!).\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'><\/div>\n<div style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'><span style=\"font-size: large\">Mu really is a wonderful one-word prayer and if you substitute \u201cmu\u201d for \u201cuniverse\u201d in Roshi\u2019s comments that follow, it becomes another nice pointer.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'><\/div>\n<div style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'><span style=\"font-size: large\">Finally, though, you just have to do it.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'><\/div>\n<div style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'><span style=\"font-size: large\">Nevertheless, here\u2019s Katagiri and a young Dosho:<\/span><\/div>\n<div style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>\u201c\u2018Before you think who you are, you are you,\u2019 means you are exactly the universe, exactly, harmoniously intimate, no gap between. You must jump the gap between you and universe.\u201d<\/span><br><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><br><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>\u201cHow can I jump the gap?\u201d<\/span><\/span><br><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>\u00a0<\/span><br><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>\u201cWith prayer.\u201d<\/span><\/span><br><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>\u00a0<\/span><br><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>\u201cI am to use prayer to go beyond self-consciousness?\u201d I asked.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'><\/span><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>I had left Catholicism and the reliance for salvation on anypower outside of \u201cme\u201d years before and thought that the essence of Zen practice was not to rely on God or anybody.<\/span><br><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><br><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>\u201cYes, of course,\u201d Roshi continued, \u201calways you are thinking, observing, calculating. This is ego. Your ego is calculating how to go beyond ego. But ego cannot go beyond ego, always holding <\/span><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>tightly to something.\u201d<\/span><\/span><br><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>\u00a0<\/span><br><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>\u201cSo I should pray?\u201d<\/span><\/span><br><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>\u00a0<\/span><br><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>\u201cYes,\u201d Roshi began to smile. \u201cYou know the story of the octopus. Japanese fishermen in old days would catch the octopus by throwing a chicken neck tied to a line into the sea. Then octopus would come and grab the chicken neck and fishermen would pull a little bit. The octopus holds on tighter. The fishermen pull more and the octopus holds on tighter.Finally, the octopus is hauled onto the fishing boat. But fishermen don\u2019t use any hooks. From the beginning the octopus is free. Let go any time, anyway.\u201d<\/span><\/span><br><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>\u00a0<\/span><br><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>\u201cOkay. So I am like the octopus and I should pray. But Roshi, if there is nothing outside, no gap between me and the universe, to whom should I pray?\u201d<\/span><\/span><br><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>\u00a0<\/span><br><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>\u201c\u2018Pray\u2019 means just pray. No object there.
