We\u2019ve been working with the fanning\/bowing koan from <\/span>Genjokoan<\/span><\/span> so the talk includes a number of thoughts about how to work with such a question and the normal flow of greed, anger and ignorance that first appears to be a barrier to this work. I then work through the first four sentences of <\/span>Genjokoan<\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/span>as preface to the truth happening point of bowing\/fanning and discuss the <\/span>Genjokoan <\/span><\/span>first lines in context of the <\/span>Heart Sutra<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/p>\n

Below you\u2019ll find my translation (with my brother\u2019s great help) of the first four stanzas of <\/span>Genjokoan<\/span><\/span> and the homework for the week.<\/span><\/p>\n

When all dharmas are <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

the buddhadharma<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

there is delusion and realization<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span>practice, life and death<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

buddhas and living beings.<\/span><\/p>\n

When ten thousand dharmas <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

are no self<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

there is no delusion <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

no realization <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

no buddhas <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

no living beings<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

no birth <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

no death.<\/span><\/p>\n

Since the buddha way<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

intrinsically leaps through <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

abundance and deficiency <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

there is birth and death<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

delusion and realization<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

living beings and buddhas.<\/span><\/p>\n

No matter what you say about it <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

flowers fall when lamented <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

and weeds flourish when disliked.<\/span><\/p>\n
