From Stuart Davis to Bokusan to Bob Dylan (some say he\u2019s got the blood of the earth in his voice) \u2013 an odd blog, indeed. Yet I\u2019m hearing a similar message. Of course, it could just be me\u2026but I offer you a few quotes about the self today.<\/span><\/div>\n

Moving along \u2026 here\u2019s a few excerpts from Soto Zen master Bokusan\u2019s Nineteenth Century commentary on \u201cTo study the Buddha Way is to study the self.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n

In \u201cOne Bright Pearl\u201d Dogen says, \u201cCeaselessly pursuing things and making them the self, pursuing the self and making it things.\u201d <\/span><\/em><\/div>\n

\u2026It is essentail in the practice to \u201cfully experience one dharma<\/a>.\u201d In whichever practice, it is good to solidly master one dharma. When we fully experience the self, it is not betrayed by myriad dharmas. When we fully experience myriad dharmas, the self drops off spontaneously.<\/span><\/em><\/div>\n

\u2026You need to study one side with great urgency. That is \u201cto study the self.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/div>\n

Now without getting all <\/span>Bargainin\u2019 for Salvation: Bob Dylan, a Zen Master?<\/span><\/a><\/em> on you, I\u2019m enjoying reinterpreting some of His songs in a <\/span>Genjokoan-esque<\/span><\/em> manner like \u201cI and I\u201d \u2013 so when he says \u201cyou\u201d he\u2019s talking about the \u201cself.\u201d In this light I\u2019ve been listening to some of the songs on his new release, <\/span>Together Through Life,<\/span><\/em> over and over in the truck, especially \u201c<\/span>Beyond Here Lies Nothing<\/span><\/a>,\u201d \u201cForgetful Heart\u201d and this from \u201cThis Dream of You:\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
