William Powell in <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Record-Tung-Shan-Classics-Asian-Buddhism\/dp\/0824810708\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1239812490&amp;sr=8-1\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\">The Record of Tung-shan<\/span><\/em><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\"> <\/span><\/a><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\">(whom I have as \u201cDungshan\u201d below) notes that the bird path is a frequent metaphor in <a href='https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/library\/buddhism' target='_blank'>Buddhist<\/a> literature from the <\/span><em><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\">Dhammapada<\/span><\/em><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\"> to the various <\/span><em><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\">Perfection of Wisdom Sutras<\/span><\/em><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.serve.com\/cmtan\/Dhammapada\/perfect.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\">Dhammpada, Verse 7<\/span><\/em><\/a><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\">:<br>\u201cFor one who has completed the journey, for one who is sorrowless, for one who from everything is wholly free, for one who has destroyed all Ties, the fever (of passion) exists not.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe mindful exert themselves. To no abode are they attached. Like swans that quit their pools, home after home they abandon (and go).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey for whom there is no accumulation, (of kammic activities or the four necessities of life) who reflect well over their food, who has Deliverance, which is Empty and Signless, as their object \u2013 their course like that of birds in the air cannot be traced.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\">The Record of Dungshan<\/span><\/em><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\"> has the following dialogue in #94, p. 55:<br>A monk asked, \u201cThe master normally tells us to follow the bird path. I wonder what the bird path is?\u201d<br>\u201cOne does not encounter a single person.\u201d replied Dungshan.<br>\u201cHow does one follow such a path?\u201d asked the monk.<br>\u201cOne should go without hemp sandals on one\u2019s feet,\u201d replied Dungshan. (note: \u201chemp\u201d and \u201cself\u201d are homonyms and so the sentence could also read \u201cOne should go without the self underfoot\u201d \u2013 later versions follow this reading)<br>\u201cIf one follows the bird path, isn\u2019t that seeing one\u2019s original face?\u201d asked the monk.<br>\u201cWhy do you turn things upside down so? asked Dungshan.<br>\u201cBut where have I turned things upside down?\u201d asked the monk.<br>\u201cIf you haven\u2019t turned things upside down, then why do you regard the slave as the master?\u201d replied Dungshan.<br>\u201cWhat is one\u2019s original face?\u201d asked the monk.<br>\u201cNot to follow the bird path,\u201d responded Dungshan.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"blogger-post-footer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/tracker\/4330911338438640912-4156136148722609339?l=wildfoxzen.blogspot.com\" alt=\"\"><\/div>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019ve continued to enjoy browsing for perspectives on the path of the bird.
