Thus the image of the path of the fish and bird.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\">The other day, I suggested the following reflection: When you practice the path of the bird, what traces are left? Ideas about this might immediately come to mind. You might say, \u201cWell, there is nothing.\u201d That misses it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\">To clarify I\u2019ll first muddy the water with some Dogen. This old man concludes his <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/hcbss.stanford.edu\/research\/projects\/sztp\/translations\/shobogenzo\/translations\/zazenshin\/zazenshin.translation.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><em><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\">Healing Point of Zazen<\/span><\/em><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\"> <\/span><\/a><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\">(my provisional rendition of the title, a.k.a., <\/span><em><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\">The Lancet of Zazen<\/span><\/em><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\">) by quoting a poem by Ch\u2019an master Hongzhi and commenting on it. I\u2019m going to selectively quote a digestable portion for you today, comment on that and move on. I might come back to this later in the week but I\u2019m thinking of an ox tail that I want to bring in tomorrow or the next day. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\">Now here\u2019s the last portion of Hongzhi\u2019s poem:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\"><span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p><span><em><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\">The water is clear right through to the bottom;<\/span><\/em><\/span><span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\"> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div><em><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\">A fish goes lazily along.<\/span><\/em><\/div>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\"><span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div><em><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\">The sky is vast without horizon;<\/span><\/em><\/div>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\"><span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div><em><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\">A bird flies far far away.<\/span><\/em><\/div>\n<p><span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\"><br><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\">In what follows, Dogen is in italics; Dosho in normal type:\n<p><\/p><\/span><\/div>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\"><span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div><em><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\">That which has no shore as its boundary\u2026\n<p><\/p><\/span><\/em><\/div>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\"><span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\">Is not nothing.\n<p><\/p><\/span><\/div>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\"><span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p><span><em><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\">\u2026this is what is meant by clear water penetrated \u201cright through to the bottom.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p><span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\">This is what is meant by formless form \u2013 the coffin is empty and the sound of a bell fades off over the hill.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\"><span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\"><span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div><em><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\">If a fish goes through this \u201cwater,\u201d it is <\/span><\/em><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\">not<\/span><em><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\"> that it does <\/span><\/em><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\">not<\/span><em><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\"> \u201cgo;\u201d<\/span><\/em><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\"> <\/span><\/div>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\">Nor that it <\/span><em><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\">does<\/span><\/em><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\"> go. Or as Bob Dylan puts it, \u201cSomething is [going] but you don\u2019t know what it is, do you Mr. (and Ms.) Jones?\u201d This <\/span><em><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\">going<\/span><\/em><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\"> is forgetting the self. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\">The degree of the \u201cgoing\u201d that penetrates \u201cright through to the bottom\u201d is the \u201cpath of the bird,\u201d along which the wholebody does not \u201cgo.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<div><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\">It is doing not-going. The wholebody with no-eyes sees. The wholebody with no-ears hears. Still, when practicing the path of the bird, what traces are left?
