When you\u2019re beset with tight, bitter feelings. When you\u2019ve been wronged? What is practice at just such a time?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Turns out that we\u2019re not alone, of course, and that practitioners have long had these normal human feelings. If you\u2019d like to dig deeply into these issues, this\u00a0 post is for you. It includes my translation of \u201c<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Case 41: Lu\u00f2p\u01d4<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0With One Foot in the Grave\u201d from\u00a0<\/span>the classic koan text, <em>Record of Going Easy\u00a0<\/em>(published as <em>The Book of Serenity<\/em> and the <em>Book of Equanimity<\/em>), a k\u014dan of deep and complex emotions.<\/p>\n<p>You might take some time\u00a0with this text. Reading <a href='https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/library\/buddhism' target='_blank'>dharma<\/a> literature like this is much different than reading a novel or a tweet. Unlike our world of hand-held devices and continuous partial attention, this work calls for continuous full attention, just like in meditation. Let the words sink in and roll around. If you lose the thread, set it down, and come back to it later.<\/p>\n<p>There are several levels of text in what is presented below.\u00a0<span lang=\"zh-Latn-pinyin\" xml:lang=\"zh-Latn-pinyin\">H\u00f3ngzh\u00ec\u00a0<span lang=\"zh-Latn-pinyin\" xml:lang=\"zh-Latn-pinyin\">Zh\u0113ngju\u00e9<\/span>\u00a0(1091\u20131157) collected the k\u014dans for <em>The Record of Going Easy<\/em>\u00a0and wrote the concluding verses. W<span lang=\"zh-Latn-pinyin\">\u00e0ns\u014dng X\u00edngxi\u00f9\u00a0(1166\u20131246) wrote the introductions (these lead with the phrase \u201cPresenting to the assembly, saying\u201d). W<span lang=\"zh-Latn-pinyin\">\u00e0ns\u014dng also wrote interlinear comments for each line of the k\u014dan and for the verses, explaining the text and also cajoling, presenting the other side, and making fun. These are presented below in italics.\u00a0W<span lang=\"zh-Latn-pinyin\">\u00e0ns\u014dng also wrote more extended commentaries for both the koan and the verse. These are not presented here, although I may post them when I finish translating them.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h4>A tiny bit of background about the Zen teacher and the koan<\/h4>\n<p>Lu\u00f2p\u01d4 (834-98) was a student and attendant for the great master\u00a0<span lang=\"zh-Latn-pinyin\" xml:lang=\"zh-Latn-pinyin\">L\u00ednj\u00ec Y\u00ecxu\u00e1n. After he left\u00a0L\u00ednj\u00ec, he travelled south and\u00a0eventually became a student of Jiashan Shanhui (successor in the\u00a0Sh\u00edt\u00f3u X\u012bqi\u0101n lineage of Chuanzi Decheng, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/terebess.hu\/zen\/boatmonk.html#a1\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Boat Monk<\/a>\u201c). <\/span><\/p>\n<p>It is significant that\u00a0Lu\u00f2p\u01d4 became a lineage holder in a branch of what became the C\u00e1od\u00f2ng (Japanese, S\u014dt\u014d) lineage after training extensively with\u00a0L\u00ednj\u00ec (Japanese, Rinzai). This speaks to the entanglement and equivalence of the early lines of teaching.<\/p>\n<p>In addition,\u00a0Lu\u00f2p\u01d4, in looking for a successor, offered a view of the divided world much like\u00a0Sh\u00edt\u00f3u\u2019s \u201cThis way won\u2019t do, that way won\u2019t do. Neither this way nor that way won\u2019t do at all,\u201d and he invites his assembly to rise and present a turning word that heals the divided world. Late in the story, he even offers transmission to\u00a0Y\u00e0nc\u00f3ng if he can do just that, highlighting the point that for the ancients, long training, let alone little training (increasingly common in our day), was simply insufficient.<\/p>\n<p>When\u00a0Y\u00e0nc\u00f3ng remains stuck, unable to present a resolution of the great matter of birth and death,\u00a0Lu\u00f2p\u01d4 cries out, \u201cPainful, painful,\u201d foreshadowing\u00a0<span lang=\"zh-Latn-pinyin\" xml:lang=\"zh-Latn-pinyin\">D\u00f2ngsh\u0101n Li\u00e1ngji\u00e8<\/span>\u2018s, \u201cTo wear the robe not having resolved the great matter is the most painful thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"zh-Latn-pinyin\" xml:lang=\"zh-Latn-pinyin\">AfterLu\u00f2p\u01d4\u2019s enlightenment and succession from Jiash\u0101n, he became a teacher with a large following, but as death neared, did not yet have a successor. That\u2019s where we pick up the story.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3706\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/88\/2017\/10\/7b9712e98924dea6c08d55890403352f.jpg\" alt=\"7b9712e98924dea6c08d55890403352f\" width=\"96\" height=\"96\">Case 41: Lu\u00f2p\u01d4\u00a0With One Foot in the Grave<\/h4>\n<p>Presenting to the assembly, saying:<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes devotion [comes] \u2013 then explain the tight, bitter feelings of being wronged. Sometimes \u00a0misfortune [comes] \u2013 don\u2019t be less than the person turning toward it and taking responsibility. Leaving the lowly, broken, upside down, finally [one is] most concerned. Tears flow and the gut aches. Then it\u2019s even more difficult to hold back from saying precisely what is on your mind. Who is the cool-eyed one?<\/p>\n<h4>Raised:<\/h4>\n<p>Lu\u00f2p\u01d4, with one foot in the grave, presented to the assembly, saying: \u201cToday [I] have one thing to ask all you people.<\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still convincing soldiers to pivot. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>If this is so, it is putting a calm head on top of a head.<\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It also cannot be this way. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>If this is not so, it is a beheaded head seeking life.<\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not this way also cannot be it.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>The head seat said, \u201cThe green mountain is always walking. Don\u2019t light a lamp in the daytime.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To say the score clearly, [makes] turning beyond difficult. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>P\u01d4 say, \u201cIs this the time to tell this story?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Losing money, suffering hardship. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>High Seat Y\u00e0nc\u00f3ng rose and said, \u201cGet rid of these two ways, please, teacher, don\u2019t go there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Easy to open the mouth of endings and beginnings \u2013 difficult to\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/i>preserve<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i>years<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of bitter disappointment. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>P\u01d4 say, \u201cHere \u2013 say more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Repeat recitation of a poem until seeing [its] achievement. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>C\u00f3ng said, \u201cSomebody cannot say it completely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not teaching people to change is outstanding. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>P\u01d4 said, \u201cI\u2019m not concerned that you say you cannot say it completely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not yet letting go without end, cannot but cease. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>C\u00f3ng said, \u201cSomebody does not have an attendant \u2013 only a receptive monk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carrying an image of grass.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>That night, [P\u01d4] called on high seat C\u00f3ng, \u201cToday you were only very reasonable.<\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just practicing gluing to the head. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>Together with the body, understand [my] late teacher\u2019s saying: \u2018In daylight, before you there is no dharma. Thinking is present.<\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chop down the laurel tree in the middle of the month and the clear light responds even more.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>Dharma is not present. It is not the activity of eyes and ears.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Come meet in person when the moon sets.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>Then what phrase is guest; then what phrase is host?\u2019<\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoid by all means \u2013 words make two stakes.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>If you sort this out and arrive at a conclusion, [I\u2019ll] give [my] bowl and bag [to you].<\/p>\n<p><i>Holding a stick, calling the dog. <\/i><\/p>\n<p>C\u00f3ng said, \u201cI can\u2019t do this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Telling it upright and intimate.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>P\u01d4 said, \u201cYou are close and able.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">[He] will scale a 72-foot<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> peak.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>C\u00f3ng said, \u201cReally, I cannot do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not admitting a single basket of earth. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>P\u01d4 shouted loudly, saying, \u201cPainful! Painful!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cheating, killing one boat person<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>The monk asked, \u201cVenerable monk, what is your view?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Losing the flame, tip-toeing through the charcoal remains. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>P\u01d4 said, \u201cThe boat of compassion is not lifted by quiet ripples. In the gorge of the double-edged sword, it is futile to let go of the wooden goose.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trying to be clever and ending up with egg on one\u2019s face.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h4>[H\u00f3ngzh\u00ec\u2019s] Verse:<\/h4>\n<p>[With] the clouds for bait, the moon for a hook, fishing at the quiet ferry crossing.<\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not entering astonishing breakers, it\u2019s hard to meet satisfactory fish. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>Aged, lonely heart, hasn\u2019t yet caught a fish.<\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Urgent action of vital energy!<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>A single tune, \u201cSorrow of Parting,\u201d returns and returns.<\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In what place? <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>Above the swiftly flowing Lu\u00f3ji\u0101ng River, a lone awakened person.<\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lu\u00f2p\u01d4 is still here.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>__________<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-3489\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/88\/2017\/06\/IMG_1047-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_1047\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\"><\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 What about when you feel that you just can\u2019t do it?
