Here\u2019s what I\u2019ll say tonight:<\/span><\/p>\nYou came to Minnesota to reveal the pure dharma wind, <\/span><\/span>sitting, talking, and dying.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\nWe were born from your single utterance. Due to your great determination to continue walking, whether the circumstances were good or bad, we continued walking.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
<\/span><\/span><\/div>\nYou said, \u201cYou are you, anyway.\u201d I heard you.\u00a0<\/span><\/span> <\/span> <\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/span><\/div>\nYou told me, \u201cAlready you are stuck. Turn over a new leaf, now!\u201d The one who has no tools obeyed.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/span><\/div>\nWhen you were sick you said, \u201cI will always be there with you.\u201d You\u2019ve followed through.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/span><\/div>\nDogen-zenji said (EK 185)<\/span><\/span> <\/span>\u201cToday\u2019s memorial dedication will be clearly examined by the [departed] sacred spirit. The deep determination of the disciple yearning for his late teacher is known only by the late teacher. The late teacher\u2019s compassion while sympathizing with his disciple is known only by the disciple\u2026. Blood and tears filling my chest, to whom can I speak? I only wish that [the teaching of] this staff would spread widely. These are the very sayings that know and repay our debt of kindness. What is this matter of going beyond buddhas and ancestors?\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/span><\/div>\nHearing with the same ears, seeing with the same eyes, I offer this:\u00a0 <\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/span><\/div>\nI Can Conjure You<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/span><\/div>\nPut out my eyes, and I can see you still,<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\nSlam my ears to, and I can hear you yet;<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\nAnd without any feet can go to you;<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\nAnd tongueless, I can conjure you at will.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\nBreak off my arms, I shall take hold of you<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\nAnd grasp you with my heart as with a hand;<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\nArrest my heart, my brain will beat as true;<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\nAnd if you set this brain of mine afire,<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\nT<\/span>hen on my blood-stream I yet will carry you.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n\u2013 Rilke<\/span><\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/span><\/div>\nToday we gather with the eyeballs and eardrums you handed on. It is not uncommon for students to be born together. To be born together and die together \u2013 this intimacy is most unusual.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
Then we will recite the \u201cGreat Compassion Dharani\u201d (Daihishin Darani) and the chant leader will dedicate the service with these words:\n<\/p><\/span>Life: Where do you come from?<\/span><\/span>
The flower of the indestructible tree gives its fragrance freely.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\nDeath: Where are you heading?<\/span><\/span>
The clouds disperse and the moon clearly appears.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/span><\/div>\nIn offering, incense, candle light, sweet water and tea and the recitation of the Dai Hin Shin Dharani we honor the wholehearted devotion of Jikai Dainin Daiosho. Whether the circumstances were good or bad, you continued walking and offered your warm hand. Now, whether the circumstances are good or bad, we continue walking, vowing to go beyond the dharma you handed on, living and dying together.<\/span><\/span>\n\u1ee0 All buddhas throughout space and time,
\u1ee0 All honored ones, bodhisattvas, mahasattvas
\u1ee0 Wisdom beyond wisdom, mahaprajnaparamita.<\/p><\/span><\/div>\n
