A loose tranlation of \u201coryoki\u201d is \u201cbowls that hold just enough.\u201d <\/p><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.zenriver.nl\/Oryoki.htm\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\">Click here for the \u201crules from headquarters\u201d for this way of eating \u2013 but don\u2019t get hung up on any \u201ctrue way,\u201d just follow the instructions offered at your practice place (or the spirit of eating in order to let go of self-clinging).<\/span><\/a><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\">\n<p>The verses quoted above are the first words that we recite before setting out the bowls, serving, eating, washing, drinking some of the wash water, and packing up the bowls.<\/p>\n<p>To paraphrase, \u201cHere we are receiving a meal within the continuity of Buddha\u2019s way, flowing harmoniously just like birth flows to enlightenment flows to teaching and flows to death. As we open ourselves with everything we meet, may we, the donors, and the food, be free from self-clinging.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Someone might say, \u201cWhat does this have to do with our post-modern lives?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d say, \u201cWhere we sit when we eat is a vital aspect of Zen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Someone might argue, \u201cBut Dogen said that Zen practice was just zazen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And I would say, \u201cYeah, but how can we make this zazen alive in our whole life?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dogen, after all, provided detailed instructions for many aspects of monastic life, including eating. For example, see <\/p><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Dogens-Pure-Standards-Zen-Community\/dp\/0791427102\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1235315740&amp;sr=8-1\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\">\u201cFukushuhanpo\u201d<\/span><\/a><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\"> or \u201cCoursing the Way Through Rice and Gruel.\u201d\n<p>But back to our post-modern lives. Informed by the practice of previous generations, whatever we use to eat \u2013 plates and forks or oryoki \u2013 we can eat with the heart of a practitioner by remembering that we are eating in order to let go of our self-clinging, not to enhance it. One practical method for remembering is to recite a verse like the one above before you slurp down your latte and croissant.\u00a0<\/p><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\"><br><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\">Katagiri Roshi regularly said (something like), \u201cIf you eat your breakfast with the intention of a bank robber, it is bank robber food. If you eat your breakfast in order to let go of self clinging, it is practitioner food.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\"><br><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\">So where do you sit when you eat?\u00a0\n<p>One way to train in sitting in the seat of a practitioner is through the traditional form of oryoki. It isn\u2019t magical. If we just say the verse and then kick back with a \u201cdo-me -dharma\u201d attitude (that\u2019s a favorite phrase of Daido Loori Roshi), we aren\u2019t sitting in the seat of a practitioner.\u00a0<\/p><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\"><br><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\">Instead, in the middle of eating, we can practice actively letting go of\u00a0greed, hate, and delusion. Within the quiet of the structure of the many rules, the mind calls out \u201cGive ME the big piece!\u201d While eating the mind calls out, \u201cHa, look at him, he took two pieces and now has to choke it down.\u201d Or the bowl slips and makes a loud noise \u2026 or we dump a bowl of tomato soup all over our clothes (and our finely sewn <a href='https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/library\/buddhism' target='_blank'>Buddhist<\/a> robe) and the mind cries out, \u201cYou dope!\u201d\u00a0<br><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\"><br>Greed, hate, and delusion arise and we can let them go, practice their emptiness, smiling with our foolishness.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"blogger-post-footer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/tracker\/4330911338438640912-3611300304476450730?l=wildfoxzen.blogspot.com\" alt=\"\"><\/div>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Buddha was born in Kapilavastu\u00a0 Enlightened in Magadha\u00a0 Taught in Varanasi\u00a0 Entered nirvana in Kushinagara\u00a0 Now we set out Buddha\u2019s bowls;\u00a0 May we with all living beings,\u00a0 Realize the emptiness of the three wheels:\u00a0 Giver, receiver and gift.
