The master said, \u201cWhen a chicken is cold it climbs a tree; when a duck is cold it goes into the water.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\nDogen\u2019s Comment:<\/span> We must study this saying through practice, looking for the Ancestor\u2019s interpretation of the Buddha Way by seeing and listening to the Buddha\u2019s sutras. The monk\u2019s question concerns the sameness or difference between the intention of the Ancestors and the intention of the sutras. Baling\u2019s answer when a chicken is cold it climbs a tree; when a duck is cold it goes into the water seems to indicate a difference; however this difference is not the usual difference of most people\u2019s views of same or different. Baling is beyond limited views of same or difference and is saying, same yet different. And so, we should not ask about same or different in that way.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\u201cStudy this saying through practice.\u201d That\u2019s the way of koan work in Soto Zen. Through practice. Okay? In it and through it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nIf we want to live like a leaping fish, we are not to ask about the normal way of seeing <\/span>same<\/span><\/span> and <\/span>different <\/span><\/span>because that would be stuck in limited views and being stuck in limited views is just so utterly tiring and suffering.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nHow are we to ask about <\/span>same<\/span><\/span>\u00a0and <\/span>different? <\/span><\/span>In other words, what is<\/span> same <\/span><\/span>and<\/span> different <\/span><\/span>beyond limited views?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\nFor now, I\u2019ll leave that for any of you who would like to come forward and speak through practice about chickens and ducks.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
