And it wasn\u2019t even about sheep and wild fox or animals of any kind (that\u2019s an inside-blog joke \u2013 just search for \u201csheep\u201d if you missed all of that).<\/span><\/span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:medium\"><br><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><\/span>\n<p><span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family:georgia\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:medium\">Anway, here\u2019s a little piece of the Hashimoto Roshi commentary on Dogen\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><i><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family:georgia\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:medium\">Doshin<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i><\/span><span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family:georgia\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:medium\">\u00a0(<\/span><\/span><\/span><i><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family:georgia\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:medium\">Way Mind<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i><\/span><span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family:georgia\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:medium\">) that my brother and I are working on, ever so slowly. Hashimoto Roshi, as you may know,\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family:georgia\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:medium\">was the teacher that the young Katagiri attended for three years at Eiheiji whose deep and steady practice impressed him so much from the first moment they met. I write a little about Hashimoto in the book.<\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family:georgia\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:medium\"><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><i><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family:georgia\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:medium\">The word \u201cWay\u201d in \u201cWay Mind\u201d has the same meaning as the word \u201cWisdom\u201d like in the phrase \u201c<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i><\/span><span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-style: italic\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family:georgia\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:medium\">unsurpassed, complete, perfect enlightenment\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><i><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family:georgia\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:medium\">\u00a0(Sanskrit,\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i><\/span><span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family:georgia\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:medium\">annutara samyaksam bodhi<\/span><\/span><\/span><i><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family:georgia\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:medium\">).<\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family:georgia\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:medium\"><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><i><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family:georgia\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:medium\">The word \u201cMind\u201d is the Buddha Mind within the limits of the manifest Buddha. To raise the Buddha Mind is to raise the Way Mind.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i><\/span><span><i><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family:georgia\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:medium\"><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><i><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family:georgia\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:medium\">This Buddha Mind has two aspects. First, do anything you are doing toward the Way Mind.<\/span><\/span><\/span><span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family:georgia\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:medium\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family:georgia\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:medium\">Second, proclaim the Way Mind. These are the Way Mind path.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i><\/span><span><i><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family:georgia\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:medium\"><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><i><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family:georgia\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:medium\">The most supreme important thing of all is to do anything with Way Mind.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i><\/span><span><i><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family:georgia\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:medium\"><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family:georgia\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:medium\">It is striking to me that \u201cWay\u201d (like in getting somewhere) means \u201cWisdom\u201d (like the end of the journey).\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family:georgia\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:medium\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family:georgia\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:medium\">This is wisdom like \u201cgnosis,\u201d by the way, and not like \u201cstuffing your head up with knowledge\u201d (<\/span><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Prajna\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family:georgia\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:medium\">see the Wikipedia entry for \u201cprajna\u201d by clicking here<\/span><\/span><\/a><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family:georgia\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:medium\">)<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family:georgia\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:medium\">The \u201cShin\u201d of \u201cDoshin\u201d is usually translated \u201cmind\u201d and also means \u201cheart,\u201d \u201cwill,\u201d and \u201cessence.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family:georgia\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:medium\">Mind arises within the limits, in the very skin bag itself, of the manifest Buddha. It is not something split off from the ephemeral world, including our thinking and talking. As such, Mind fills the ditches and moats.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family:georgia\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:medium\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family:georgia\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:medium\"><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family:georgia\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:medium\">Easy to say, hard to practice. And hard to say, easy to practice.<\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family:georgia\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:medium\"><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family:georgia\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:medium\">Then there is the two aspects. Moving towards the Way Mind in everything we do and the Way Mind proclaiming itself. The word we\u2019ve translated as \u201cproclaiming\u201d also could be \u201cheralding,\u201d \u201cannouncing,\u201d or \u201cpioneering.\u201d So the Way Mind pioneers itself.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family:georgia\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:medium\">Sometimes we consciously endeavor to practice and sometimes we roll like a black ball through the dark night (I think Keizan said that).
