Dharma<\/a>. One morning Roy, a long-time student of Katagiri Roshi, began his talk verbally stumbling\u00a0around.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\nWhile I was walking to the zendo I began crossing the street\u00a0just as a piece of newspaper was picked up by the wind and\u00a0blown across my path. As I bent down to pick up the paper,\u00a0I thought, \u201cI hope someone sees me bending down to pick\u00a0up this paper,\u201d so I froze. I didn\u2019t want to pick up the newspaper for the wrong reason. I could see how stinky my ego\u00a0was, only wanting to do something small for the good if\u00a0someone saw me doing it. Then I noticed that no one else\u00a0was around, so I started chasing the paper, but just as I bent\u00a0down to grab it, I thought, \u201cI will still know that I\u2019m doing\u00a0something good, so picking it up is still stinky.\u201d I didn\u2019t know\u00a0what to do. By this time, the newspaper had blown away, so\u00a0I gave up.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\nOut of the silence, Roshi growled, \u201cPick up the newspaper!\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\nJumping into birth and death, picking up the newspaper, is the\u00a0dynamic working of realization. What must be dropped to actualize\u00a0this dynamic working now?<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n
